I don’t think little Ernie will be calling me anything but WAAAAAAHAAAA! for a while, but he’ll probably make words one of these days. So what should I pick for a name? I only had one grandfather, and mostly I called him Hey Granny says to pay the barman and get your *** home.

Did you old veteran grandpas pick your own title, or let it develop on its own? What did you wind up with?

I had a few G&Ts and suggested to my wife (who seems to be going with Nana) that I might like him to call me Nigel. That’s not my name but the idea of a little Louisiana baby calling us Nana and Nigel sounded funny. Unfortunately it seems to have gained some traction.

First off, congratulations on little Ernie.

We have 16 grandchildren. All except three of them refer to me and Miss Judy as Grandpa and Grandma. The three, for some reason, occasionally refer to us as Pop and Nana. I think it's because when they were little they couldn't say "Grandpa" or "Grandma" and "Pop" and "Nana" were what came out...and it stuck.:)

Grandkids are great. Ours all live relatively close to us so we see them frequently. For some reason, they seem to think that their grandparents are w-a-a-a-y smarter than their parents...and I don't do anything to dissuade them. Another thing, grandparents can spoil the heck out of grandchildren and it's okay. As my late mother-in-law once said when I told her she was spoiling my kids, "You can't spoil 'em by loving them."

Miss Judy has a cross-stitched sampler hanging in one of our guest rooms. It says, "If Mother says no, ask Grandmother. If all else fails, ask Grandpa.":D

I've given each of my grandchildren their first pocket knife when each turned seven years old. I've taught them how to start a fire without matches, how to ride a horse, how to clean a fish, the correct way to paddle a canoe...and the list goes on.

You are going to have a great time with Ernie. Enjoy every minute because they grow up too quickly.:)

Somehow, my little man started calling me "Pappy". I know because he says it roughly 2,000 times a day.
I've noticed since he turned 4 he's called me Pap a few times.
Not sure what his sister will call me, as she's mostly in the grunt stage.

I think "Nigel" is a great idea. Stick with it!

My maternal grandfather went by "Stewie." I have no idea why. His first name was Oliver. His wife, my maternal grandmother went by "Nana." My paternal grandparents were named more conventionally: Granny and Grandad.

I have two grandsons. Their father, my eldest, asked me what I wanted to be called. I said "Grandad," and that's who I am.)

Wish I had said, "Nigel."

My six grandkids, was five until this morning, call me Toaster. I got my grandkids second hand when my wife and I got married. When we were still dating we went to a spring soccer game for two of the grandkids, Cami age 7 and Judah age 6. It was a cold windy day and Cami played first. When her game was done she didn't have a warm up jacket and was getting cold. She climbed up into my lap and I wrapped my coat around her. After a few minutes she looked up and said "You're warm, I'm going to call you Toaster." The other grandkids picked it up and the name stuck.

We have 9, 8 talking. All but two use Grandma and Grandpa. Thr two use Popop or just Pop & grandma.

My oldest married a German girl, I was informed that I could be anything I wanted, except for the German term. Hasn't been a problem.

The grandkid will most likely use whatever term their mother refers to you by. You'll only get "Dirty old S.O..." if you earned it!

I worked for my dad and brother, and at work we used J.T & J.L. I have heard the next generation use those. So, remember those little ears and little minds are ALWAYS on!

I trained all my grandkids to call me Grandpa. Though it may be cute when they're two, I think it's ridiculous to hear a grown person call their grandfather "P-paw" or their grandmother "Me-maw", etc.

No offense to anyone - just my opinion. :)

One of my acquired grandkids is in Mexico. First time she met me (at about four years of age) my wife was asking me to get stuff and do things, usually in the form, "Baby, can you get me...". I became Abuelito Baby, but now she's older sometimes she calls me Steve.
