I just watched a good video regarding counterfeit/fake Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita tools. I was unaware that the tool market had been so extensively hit by Chinese counterfeit's. I also found out that even motor oil, small household appliances, and devises are now being counterfeited in a large way. Not just clothing and expensive items either.

So it's way more than just Rolex watches now - it's anything that consumers will buy, especially online. Your best protection against winding up with fake inferior products is to just use plain old common sense. When buying online, if something seems to good to be true, too good of a bargain and takes 2-4 weeks to be delivered (a sign it's being shipped from China - see where it's shipped from) - take a pass!

The fake/counterfeit tools were tested and while they did function to an extent, they did not provide the same reliability and power the original real tools do. By buying fake products, we only encourage China to make more - exacerbates the problem!! As usual, we are all our own worst enemy!

Be aware, stay alert exercise caution and above all, use common sense when purchasing.

I make an occasional visit to a large local flea market, the number of vendors selling Milwaukee, Dewalt and Ryobi cordless tools is staggering! There is table after table of tools, batteries and chargers, most of it new in the box. I've always wondered where it all comes from.

I got a fake Motorcraft oil filter once for the F350. Fortunately I was suspicious and went to a dealer to compare it to an OEM. Yep, fake.

They wanted it and traded me a good one for it. I think it's still sitting on the shelf. I guess every time somebody complains about their $35 oil filters they pull it down.

A lot of those are stolen by retail theft rings.

I was told by a small engine shop owner that many name-brand power tools, especially mowers & chain saws, that even some sold by Big Orange have bearings, etc., have cheaper parts you can't see until you have to repair them. That was years back, but I used to buy from a regular tool vendor that I dealt with when I worked for a living, just in case. I always felt I'd have a good time working in the "Planned Obsolescence" department!

Saw something on TV recently about the Chinese knockoff luxury women’s handbags and fashion accessories. Gucci, Prada, etc. They have gotten so good at copycatting down to the tiny details that the experts often can’t tell fakes from the real thing.

The brand name tools are more & more being made in China (& other countries). The counterfeit ones are probably made in the same factory on the same assembly line.

No. Yes, many of the Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita tools were are are still being made in China, but they are made in controlled QC factories owned (at least in part) by those manufacturers so control can be exercised.

Most of the fakes are made in other non factory run facilities with blueprints, spec's and pictures smuggled out of the official factories.

I have this discussion with some of my cigar club Cronies ..... Pretty much all the cigars being sold on the streets of Cuba are made of cuban tobacco. HOWEVER, that tobacco has been picked up from the floors, tables and smuggled out when the worker's go home, The cigars are poorly rolled in their homes with inconsistent components, low skill levels and bad QC. They are not aged properly and certainly not stored under proper conditions. Are they actually "Cuban" cigars? I guess technically since they are made from Cuban components by Cuban's - the answer is yes. Are they the same as the real deal official Cuban cigars? NO WAY! I see this close similarity with bogus Chinese goods too.

My Buddy Tom’s Family owned a Shop -Gas Station Equipment Company in Memphis.
Even back in the day, they would approached by ‘Travelers’ selling counterfeit air compressors, etc.
Always out of state vehicles, asking for cash, lower price than they could buy legit.
