OK, now I aint one to bash ANY city or state....but a yankee BBQ joint won a contest sponsored by a yankee TV show???? C'mon now. Yall know good BBQ HAS to come from the south.
Just a couple of questions...
1. beef or pork?
2. chopped or sliced
3. describe yalls brunswick stew(if you ask what that is you get a zero)
Lets see what ya know of BBQ there ya NY'er you!
*NOTICE*
This post is to be taken with a VERY large grain of salt as I am attempting to pull Mr Macs chain and if I can get Ladder's at the same time then all the better!!
Carry on.

OK. I like NY. I like NYC. I like upstate NY. I'm going there on vacation soon. However, I will NOT be eating anything described as BBQ while I'm there. Italian? Yes. Pizza? Absolutely. Chinese? Very likely. BBQ? No way.
Sorry, Gordy, but that dog won't hunt.

Being from Texas and now Georgia, BBQ is a staple.
Having said that, I've eaten at the Dinosaur's in both Syracuse and Rochester, and they're good!
The best, I don't know about that, but well worth the stop. I don't miss them when through that area.

Lived in Rochester and ate Dinos a couple of times and it was pretty good. The best BBQ joint I have had was in Bristol, TN but I can't remember the name of the place but I think it took top honors in a best BBQ contest.

Best BBQ in the coutnry is from NY?
Who was judging? What were their qualifications?
Any of 'em ever eat in a good BBQ joint in the south? In Texas? (FWIW, some of the best I've ever had was at Rudy's, in Leon Springs, TX). In Kansas City? Hell, in the far west, where we don't brag about it, but we can cook purty good?
Those the same people who think the country stops at the Hudson River, or maybe in New Jersey somehwere?

I hav eaten Barbeque in Mississippi, Lousiana, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois and NY.
Dinasour BBQ is not bad. It is spiced a little hot due to use of hot sauces but they offer beef, pork and chicken (though chicken is not BBQ IMHO).
There is one in Harlem NYC which is Frequented by former President Clinton supposedly.
Upstate NY has a surprising number of BBQ resturants open in the last 10 years. SOME are passable many not so, but the art is appearing in upstate NY because frankly people like the food and they have had it in their travels.

I give an ABC BBQ poll the same credence as their political polls... worth less than a warm bucket of spit.
Dinosaur BBQ may be the best... but I wouldn't believe it from ABC's polling anymore than the other cockeyed poll results that they report as news.

I have it in Georgia and Texas also, but I have to say that some of the best I ever tasted was in Oklahoma. Good stick to your ribs real southern BBQ ! Now I'm hungry.........Shoo

Smithfan--Rudy's is good. It's always worth the stop.
The best brisket I've had was in Shiner. This guy operates out of an old gas station, and is only open Thurs, Fri, & Sat IIRC. Grab some Q and head down to the Spoetzl Brewery for the tour and some samples!
Also good:
Abilene--Harold's, if he hasn't retired. Joe Allen's is good, but a solid #2 behind Harold.
Cabot, AR--The Mean Pig
West of Abilene on I-20--I can't remember where it is, but it's the only thing at that exit. I think it was called KC's.
There's also a pretty good place out the back gate at Ft Benning (Lawson AAF).
Absolute worst BBQ I've ever had was in Fayetteville, NC. I knew I was hosed when the waitress didn't know what a pulled pork sandwich was. Isn't that a Carolina staple? Isn't that like a place in Philly not knowing what a cheesesteak is? Unfortunately, I was with a group of people and they wanted to eat there.

The very best BBQ ever made could be served in NY on a silver platter by a nude super model and I wouldn't leave the South to eat it. Why travel 1500 miles when I could have the 2nd best BBQ ever made served by a very sweet Southern waitress in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

I live in the KC area and have eaten some very good BBQ here. The problem with a lot of Q joints is that they've gone main stream, i.e. expanded, modernized, etc. The best joints are the ones who have stayed original to their roots usually in the same 50-75 year old building. I've eaten at Arthur Bryants (where presidents and visiting dignitaries go) when it was just a one store, greasy spoon, no plastic gloves place. Beer was served in frozen mugs. The sauce is a weird gritty orange stuff that will stain forever, it's an acquired taste. Order was " a combo sand and a fry ". Some guy slapped a bunch of meat on two slices of white bread and slopped on sauce w/ a paint brush. Another guy grabbed a big handle full of real potato fries and wrapped them in newspaper. The burnt ends were free to grab with your fingers for tasting sample.
My brother has a way of telling a good BBQ shack from the outside, must have the owner's name on it (i.e. Ed's BBQ) and an unstacked pile of hickory out back.
Best BBQ I ever ate was at Massey's in El Dorado, AR. It was on the edge of "the neighborhood". No seating, just get a chopped beef or pork and eat in the car. Oh, and the Old Hickory in the same town was fabulous...
OBTW, BBQ sandwiches do not have sliced meat...

In Texas you can pay $10 for a plate of great ribs with fries. In NY you pay $50 for the same thing and get to wait 30 minutes before seating.
In Texas the beer is also colder
But the very best ribs, pork ribs are in Salina Kansas at a small place called Hickory Hut.

Good one.
Soooooooooo when I get tired of eating fresh seafood and fruit I go to South Carolina for BBQ. Also make a stop in Georgia for some peaches, they smell so good and I also love their accents.

I'm sure there's some real Southerners in Florida off the beaten path.

We don' have ak-sents.
Mosta the resta y'all do, but we don'.
Keep it fun, guys. I'd hate to havta say I locked a thread on barbecue.
Ain't nuthin here worth gettin upset over. Let the NY'ers beeleeeeeve they got the best. Else, they'll be pokin' 'roun' down here lookin for sum, and sum of em always winds up stayin'.
JOKE, Mike. Don't get upset!!
I drove through NY last year, just a few miles north of NYC. The Catskills, I believe? I must say I was impressed. The country was rugged and beautiful. The people were friendly and polite (but had heavy ak-sents).

We have a lot of ranchers and cowboys south of Kissimmee and there are a lot of animals that aren't made out of fiberglass like the ones at Disney. The best part of Florida is the south end of a u-haul going north.

To paraphrase: "Good BBQ is in the eye of the beholder".
I eat BBQ everywhere I go. I like to experience everyone's version. It's all good (well most of it ) I haven't had any of the South Eastern? BBQ where they do the pulled pork w/ some sort of vinegar based sauce on it. Would love to try that...
I'm an equal opportunity BBQ lover!!!

Give me a break! People who watch GMA don't have a clue what BBQ IS much less know what is good. Besides, any BBQ joint owner who says, "It's cool" should not be allowed to even buy pork much less cook and sell it!

See now, I'd have to be asking how the food is served up before I could even begin to make a judgment on best. I imagine this NY BBQ place uses them round glasslike thing...whatdiyacallem...plates(???). The best BBQ eats get served on butcher wrap with plenty of pickles and onions on the side.
I don't know if the food is as good as it used to be, but Joe Cotton's in Robstown, TX always had my vote. When I was a kid, for $5 you'd get about a three foot long sheet of butcher wrap loaded with brisket, sausage and whatever else you wanted, plus it seemed like a 1/2 loaf of bread. Last time I was there (~10 years ago) the prices had skyrocketed to $8.50 for a two foot sheet of wrap, still loaded.
Hmmm...maybe I'll smoke a tri-tip today...this thread has made me hungry.
