News outlets are reporting the USS Gettysburg shot down a Super Hornet shortly after it took off from USS Harry S Truman last night. The crew successfully ejected with one of the two crew reported with minor injuries.

I looked at several sites and all are essentially using the same verbiage, probably because they are all using the CENTCOM press release.

This guy is a former F-14 crewman:

So, how many people get relieved of duty/fired?

A big whoopsie there! PTL they ejected and were picked up. What ever happened to IFF?

If actually a "friendly fire" error, I suspect it will be harder to buff out the OERs/NCOERs than it will be to address the damage to the plane.

About those medals.....way back in the mid-60's I was in AFROTC (mandatory). First year, we got a new detail commander, a light Colonel. He had an immense plate of fruit salad. We also had an older long service Major who'd flown in WWII, had a single row of ribbons-and style. Not yet knowing about the fighter mafia, we figured Major Abe (as we later called him) for a screwup.

By the second year, we'd learned to read the ribbons. The 05s ribbons were the I was here/there/everywhere and a good boy. The major got his 4th DFC and we got to not only hear about how, but he later showed pix of what his aircraft looked like after RTB. They scrapped it. The only other gong I recall is a Presidential Unit Citation from WWII. He only wore the important stuff.

The term friendly fire is somewhat of an oxymoron. Having been splattered by shrapnel from two 2.75" rockets fired by an AH-1G Cobra, my first instinct once everyone is is back on the ground is to pick a fight. In most cases there are no good excuses for friendly fire incidents. In the case of the UH-1H pictured below we were actually able to get it back to our camp but the VC finished it off two days later. The subsequent fire and ammo cooking off was pretty spectacular.
