That was my thinking when I post the comment, I think now however my thinking was unfounded. Very possible the box held a K38 with serial no K221140 of around 1954 vintage! D R

So I have to wonder where the K22 that was in the bottom is as well as the K38 that came with the top? D R

That is perhaps the handsomest N frame configuration to come from S&W! You must be very proud to have ownership if only for the duration. :-) D R

I like the Post War M&P rather than Pre Model 10! Pre-Model 10 would start with the C prefix in my way of thinking! D R Oh by the way that is a High condition shooter & one that would by hard to pass up, assuming the price was reasonable.

I think the most noticable is the hammer, also there is no pin visible under the cylinder latch & of course the C prefix!
