Increase your crimp and make sure you're using a roll crimp. 7.8 gr of AA#5 pushing a 214 gr LSWC has been one of my favorite and best loads for over twenty years. BUT. . . you have to crimp it pretty well. I use a roll crimp I can easily see without aid of a magnifying glass.

Coming in to this thread and discussion two years late, but just acquired a 17-4 with pinned (8 3/8") barrel that's in 98% condition and with the smoothest action I've ever felt on any S&W rimfire wheelgun. Got in on New Year's Eve--what a great way to finish up the year. JD
