    Looks like an FBI 1076!

I have one and had a lot of problems with it failing to extract. I sent it back to Smith & Wesson and they added a second spring on the extractor. After that it ran fine. Great looking pistol, not too many around.

Smith & Wesson 52-2 Field Strip

When removing and reinstalling the slide on a 52-2, should the hammer be left cocked or lowered to the fired position? I know that on the DA/SA models the hammer should be down, but I have never field stripped a single action Smith & Wesson. Thank you, JSS

    1076 - Failure to Extract.

I agree that it could be the extractor spring. I had the exact same problem with mine and sent it to Smith & Wesson for repair. They replaced the spring and I had it back 9 days later. It runs great now. If I remember correctly, they told me that there was a spot in the extractor for a second...

4506 how long will it last with maintenance

Keep the gun clean and well lubricated in accordance with the owners manual. I use Mil-Comm products, particularly their TW25B light grease, made here in NJ. It stays where you put it. You can do damage to a gun during disassembly, cleaning and assembly if you are not careful. Follow the...

Newbie to semi's - barrel question

What you should see inside of the barrel are lands and grooves and as long as they uniformly spiral out clockwise from the chamber to the crown you should be fine. If I remember correctly, my 4506-1 has six, not five, but they are hard to count. You can go crazy looking for scratches in your...

FBI 1076, this was the one; but Murphy got involved!!

My FBI 1076 was very rough when I purchased it and the night sights were also burned out. I sent it Smith & Wesson and had the sights replaced and the slide and frame glass bead blasted. The price was very fair and the work was outstanding. The pistol looked better than most of the new ones that...

    Best 10MM Hollow Point loads?

Hornady makes a nice 10mm round in either 155, 180 and 200 gr, all medium velocity. My 1076 shoots well with them.

    4506

My 4506-1, made in 1997, has a black trigger, black hammer and a stainless de-cocker. My understanding is that the model was last catalogued in 1999, discontinued in 2000 and manufactured in limited production runs until 2003.

Finally shot my 4506...this thing is a laser...

Good luck with your new gun. I find that I like my 4506-1 better than my Sig 220 Elite.

3rd Gen recoil springs and rods

What I'm calling the bushing is the disk that retains the spring on one side and engages the cut out in the barrel on the other, as you show in your picture. The edge that seats in the cut out is what can get beat up. There is a good article on Vintage Pistols where the author reviews the 4506...

3rd Gen recoil springs and rods

I have struggled with the recoil spring and short guide rod on my 1076, much more so than my 4506. I find it easiest and safest to set the slide upside down on a towel to help secure it, install the assembly and compress the spring with my strong hand and place the guide rod bushing in the...

    3rd Generation Replacement Barrels

Old Roger, Fastbolt, Two Guns and KurtC, thank you for all of the great information and input. Fastbolt, your intrinsic knowledge of the workings of these pistols and the fervor with which you share it never ceases to amaze, impress and educate me. Thank you again, JSS

    32 S & W Long

I have a Smith & Wesson .32 Long Revolver blue finish with a 3.25” barrel that was manufactured in 1913, known as the Hand Ejector Model of 1903 Fifth Change. The information that I received from the Smith & Wesson Historian is that my pistol was produced until 1917 with the serial numbers...
