I recently bought a model 63 at Cabela's to replace the one I foolishly sold 50 or so years ago. Waited a long time. Serial number is 1379xx. On the bottom of the frame, just behind the trigger guard are stamped the letters HV. Very small about 1/8" and look original. Anyone else see this...
Cal 44. hello from northern Nevada. I have an I frame Regulation Police with a 3.25"barrel. It weighs 17.5 oz. Also have a J frame model 30 with a 3"barrel which weighs 20.5 oz. So a 3oz difference. For me they are both fine pocket guns and delight to carry and shoot.
Best, Nevada duke.
Lee, I have a Winchester marked wood chisel with the same markings as your hatchet. It is a 1/8" wide and 8" long piece of fine steel, shaped and finished like a precision gun part. I think is authentic as is your hatchet. My chisel is still in service along with a couple of Buck Bros chisels...
Raljr1, You did real good on that deal. After your new pics I'm all in on original finish. Looks just like ours in color and polish. Ours is a 5", is yours 6 or 6 1/2"? Ours came with the original service grips, very uncomfortable to shoot for my big hands. Currently using some N -frame...
raljr1, I purchased a 2nd model .44 from Gunlist in Reno a year ago. From your pictures I would guess your finish is original. A very deep dark blue with an almost perfect polish underneath. Ours numbers to 1932 per SCSW. Could the polishers-final assembly people have been working their...
Toyman, hello from the northern half of Nevada. Sperm oil was the lubricant used in the original formula for Ed's Red Bore Cleaner. A suitable modern substitute is good old ATF, automatic transmission fluid. I use ER bore cleaner all the time with excellent results, might try this formula...
Scruffy, I have one question, are you right or left handed? My old friend who is left handed always has to adjust his sights similar to what you posted. I once loaned him my precious model 624 to take to the Nevada Cast Boolit shoot to use in the stake shoot contest. Told him to adjust the...
model 48 accuracy
Thanks to all who replied. BC and SP, you have saved me from an expensive adventure, so thank you. BC, your work with the K22 22LR sounds good. Did you observe any undue pressure signs with the .224 mags going down the .222 barrels? Fitting a magnum cylinder to one of our...
Do any of you have experience with a Model 48 with both cylinders? Looking at one on an auction site, 8&3/8 barrel with aux. 22LR cylinder. Any velocity or accuracy reports or just remembered experiences are welcome. Thanks.
Best regards, Nevada duke.
From shooting DA revolvers for over 50 years, I think both systems are pretty durable. I've had one hammer mounted firing pin break, and that was on 1920's era Colt Police Positive in 32 long. It broke while dry firing, I must have thought it was a Smith. Plus side was I got to learn about the...
Dave, I like it. The visibility factor alone is worth lots of points when it is dark and lonely and the dogs are barking. And I want one

All guns are a compromise. The 3" S&W 60-10 is the best compromise that I have found for ease of carry, accuracy, and power. Don't let the short barrel arguments get to you. A good load of H-110 under any 125gr HP will be well over 1200fps. Death to liquid based life forms like watermelons...
It is always a good idea when test firing a newly assembled 1911 type pistol, to test the disconnector function. Load one round and fire it, then load two rounds and fire, three rounds and then you are probably good to go with a full magazine. Full auto in a 1911 is something you don't want to...
