I remember somebody else here saying that they couldn't stamp more than six characters at that time. The one above is 5 characters. 62J100 brings it back to six characters. A few years later they were able to stamp 7 digits with JXXXXXX.
Your gun was shipped around 1968 1969 judging by the six digit number on the bottom of the frame, which is the serial number. The other number was a production number, which means nothing.
I agree. The 3 inch barrel looks weird to me too, and seems to defeat the purpose of what a small 5 shot revolver was designed for in the first place. S&W is a for profit business however.
Got these about 10 years ago. Finally decided to put them on. They feel really great, just about as good as the Herrett's that I had on it. Does anyone else here have a pair of these on a J?
I have my father's Model 36 that was made in '69 or '70. He carried it as a plainclothes police officer for 16 years. He didn't like the small factory grips, so he bought a set of Herrett's Shooting Ace grips. They're still on it, and they are a very comfortable grip.
$350 is a steal. Where I'm at that gets you a beater no box gun. Unless it's a friend or family sale as in your case.
Whoever thinks 49's are ugly simply lacks taste buds.;)
