I've got a 3" 625. Just bought a 3" Model 10 barrel and now put some money down on a 3" 65-5 at a local pawn shop.

Sorry about the crappy pics but I didn't think to take my own. These are from the ad.

As you can see I'm missing the thumbpiece and nut.

Are these pieces unique to this model? Will just about any K frame part work?

I'm not sure about the grips. I might get some Magnas and a grip adapter.

Any suggestions?

Find out the cost of the parts replacement first so you aren't taken by surprise later. Make sure there isn't rust under the rubber. Then it's just regular used revolver checks for timing, push off, cylinder alignment, flame cutting, brass imprints in the recoil shield, buggered screws, firing pin wear, wear to the hand, and whatever else I may be forgetting. I know I love my three inch 65-5 and would still buy it again. I just did the thread with the cocobolo Ahrends Retro Banana but if I could do that over I would have bought the finger groove version of the same grip. I think that one he calls his Retro Combat round butt. But all of the Ahrends finger groove models fit my hand very well.

This one was on tucson.backpage.com. Is this the one you were looking at?

I was visiting my in-laws who live just down the street from the pawn shop. I stopped in and could not resist. They have quite a selection of stuff in there. All the pawn shops on my side of town stopped selling guns. They still take them in on pawn but sell them off to other gun stores.

3" barrels rock. I think they're the best looking barrel on any revolver yet. I've got a 10, 64 and 65 with 3" barrels and want more... more... more... I need a fix!

Ya that is the one, I hope you didn't pay asking price as they were willing to take $100.00 off of the marked price. which made it a steal even with the missing parts.

Yep they made the same deal with me. They tried to sell me some more guns while I was there as well. I like buying at pawn shops that are willing to deal with you.

Welcome to the 3" club. They are extremely addictive and very versatile revolvers. Congrats on that baby. Easy fix on your thumb latch and a nice revolver.

Pawn shops used to be the bomb years ago when guns were priced low. Sometimes you'll hear of someone getting a real steal but they're few and far apart. The days of getting really great deals on them in my neck of the woods are gone. I quit dealing with them as they take advantage of folks suffering from hard times these days, then jacking the prices up big time. The biggest pawn shop in town tried charging me $150.00 to ship off a 3" 29 a few years back. A good friend was losing his house and selling his guns to make his payments. He went to C******** (same PS) and the owner offered him $250.00 on a Ruger Redhawk in .357 that was ANIB. I bought it off of him for $400.00 and it's his if he ever gets the money back for the same price. Helped him sell his remaining 8 guns locally or here on the forum.

I haven't been in his shop since as I spent alot of money (thousands) over the years and never will again give the guy one red cent of my cash!

Know it's business but just hate seeing good folks being taken advantage of when their chips are down, especially during these hard times. Also don't watch the show as it's proof positive on what I've written. Vultures lurking over folks prized possessions telling the seller that their goods will be hard to sell then turning around and saying they will be making big bucks as soon as the transactions complete. JMHO.

"I Think I've Got a 3" Fixation"

You and a few million others :-).

Me too, Ruger SP101, S&W Model60, S&W M&P9c, Kimber Ultra Covert II. I like these little dudes that hide so well and keep their mouth shut until asked to speak and speak well they do....

+1 on that! I have done the same thing with my friends - if they need money, I'll buy their (often prized) possession with the understanding that they can get it back for the same price at any future date.

I finally found a pawn shop in my area that is run by a very nice fellow. I picked up a nice mid-60's model 36 from him for $289 last week. Here's a pic. Note the original, serialized, diamond wood grips. It has a small area of pitting just behind, and above, the logo. All in all a very fair deal.

Back to the topic: I got one of the bud's 3" model 10's and I think I found a new favorite barrel length!

In 1979 I was stationed briefly at Ft. McCellan, AL. I found an as new, Mod 27 3&1/2" NICKLED in the original gold and blue box.I already had a blued one but the price was unbeatable! [I wish I could remember what it was!] Anyway I bought it and preserved it until 1985. I had just come back from Germany and found one of my best friends on trial for murder![ He killed his Father in Law]He was later aquitted but he was selling his guns for lawyer fees. I sold the 27 for, probably 1/2 what it was worth to buy my friends Colt SAA in .45 Colt and his Old Mod Ruger in .41 mag. After his aquittal I sold the .41 Mag to someone[I needed living expences] and held on to the Colt in the hopes that my friend could buy it back. His wife had given him the gun and I had done an action job on it for him and wanted to see him have it back.Alas, he had to move away and get a divorce. I still have the Colt but often wish I still had a like new ITB 3&1/2 Mod 27! But that is what friends are for, no? Nick

Good for you on all three accounts! Congrats on the 36. Especially keeping him away from the bottom feeders, which is what the local PS owners are HERE. Had a real good connection at Castle Keep Firearms down in Clearwater, Fl. years ago, but moved from that rat race area. Wish my old nickeled 36 looked like yours. Gave it to my detective daughter with an ankle holster as a BUG. The finish is horrible but it shoots great and was my Moms revolver. She kept it in an old holster under the bed when she didn't have it in her purse. It will stay in the family God willing, so that my Granddaughter will have a fine weapon to carry when it's her turn.

Also wish I had the money for one of them 10's but thanks to a couple bouts of pneumonia 4 months apart my gun buying for the next year is shot(:. I like 3 & 4" barrels for carrying but use either my 17 or 57 with their longer 6 & 6.5" tubes for hunting.

Still refuse to watch them buzzards on Pawn Stars! The Old Man is the worst IMO and it trickles down the bloodtrail. They make me sick to my stomach. Used to yell at the tv telling folks NOOOOOOOOO at the lowball offers they would make to them. Loved it when they would keep their goods and seeing Ricks tongue go back in his mouth where it belongs:)!

I still do. I can't understand why the jerks don't get on the internet and look up what they're wanting to sell, before ever walking into the place...Grrrrrrrr

Rix , welcome to the club. With your new model 65 you just shoot,
clean, repeat. 38 wadcutters are great for practice.
Enjoy yourself. And now you'll be looking everywhere for them.

They come in all shapes and sizes and calibers.
