Lost a little respect for Tom Selleck

I don't see the problem with Selleck promoting reverse mortgages.

Ronald Reagan shilled for a soap powder and an electric company.

What's wrong with a man earning a living and providing for his family?

Cigarettes too IIANM. And he still became President. I like Selleck's work and don't care who he shills for or frankly, what his position on any social issue is.

I don't think I've ever bought anything based on a tv commercial. Sometimes they are entertaining, especially during the Super Bowl, but for educating me as a consumer...nah. There's been a few spokespersons over the years that I'm disappointed when I see them (Selleck is one of them), but I don't lose any sleep over it. My favorite spokesperson right now is Lily from AT&T, but I'm not going out to change my cell service because of her.

I had a Great uncle that was a widower and no kids. He sold his house for way less than what it was worth but he got lifetime rights. That's about the same thing as a reverse mortgage. He and the buyer were happy and I was happy for both of them. Larry

Don't give me this **** about these stars "just trying to make a living".

Advertisers know that many people are gullible enough to fall for a pitch and using a well known figure makes them even more gullible.

Selleck's 2016 net worth is around $25mil....Maybe I'll start up a GoFundMe page for the guy.

The thing about Selleck and conserving water. He had his trucked in from elsewhere. Selleck broke no rules or laws and legally purchased that water and having it trucked in. Nobody lost anything at all. Selleck can afford it-so why not?

Correct. But, it's easier to spread negativity than to do research and learn the truth.

When reverse mortgages were first marketed there were indeed a lot of abusive terms and misleading sales tactics. But some regulation and reform has been put in place and their horrible reputation from the early loans is really no longer deserved. They aren't for everybody, but can make sense. If your opinion of them is more than two years old you might want to look again.

No one is making it sound like he's working paycheck to paycheck. But it is just a job. He was approached and asked to do a commercial for X amount of money. That's a job, doesn't matter how much it pays. Just cause he makes a lot of money doesn't mean he just up and quits. This isn't the lottery.

I had a friend who came from a modest background who studied television repair in the late 1950's. We all know what happened to that occupation and by the time it evaporated, he felt he was too old to retrain for something else. He lived conservatively and used the reverse mortgage to survive his later years. He ended up taking his own life at 87 using one of our favorite products. As others have said, in some cases reverse mortgages work for people. For most of us, they are probably not a good deal.
