My experience from A to Z picking up a handgun for the first time:

With more folks then ever applying for firearm permits here, the local fingerprinting joint decided to further bottleneck the system by limiting firearms app appointments to a handful every few days. This has backed up the Identigo fingerprinting appointment availability to a month out or more.

Take that and add the additional month (or more) of waiting for the local town's police chief to review your application and you're sitting at a cool 8-10 weeks for a purchaser ID card.

Additional handgun purchase permits without the fingerprinting nonsense only took about 3 weeks.

Then after the background check for the firearm transfer ($65 at the range) we're looking at another 7-10 days.

And forget about a concealed carry license.

I’d also like to see someone sue NJ over this unlawful denial of their 2A rights.

A right delayed is a right denied!

Sad to hear of the circumstances in NJ....maybe you and some like minded folks can sue them into compliance?

That kind of lawsuit takes the SAF, the CCRKBA, and the NRA - individuals don't have that kind of firepower (no pun intended) - and you literally need to be denied in order to have standing to sue. The OP wasn't denied, never mind the cliche' which I don't disagree with.

Thanks for posting bangbangnj - as you might imagine, I have relatives in NJ and I need for them to see the current state of affairs. Plus everyone here needs to know, just because..........

Definitely sounds like one of the worst states like N.Y. and Ma. Heard Ma. became a May Issue state for just about everything except blackpowder and one needs a card to purchase the ammo.

I grew up in NJ. It was worse 20 years ago.

It was 3-4 months to get a handgun permit. My local Chief of Police sent my wife a letter asking her if there was any reason not to give me a permit. Letters were also sent to 2 references. If anyone did not respond, no permit.

New Jersey has certainly created a Byzantine system.

It’s not obvious to me that the system you describe, no matter how Byzantine, creates a cause of action in court.

You haven’t been denied the right to have a gun: it’s just not as quick as you’d like.

Impatience isn’t a good legal theory for litigation.

Moved to NJ in 1971. Bought a S&W mod 15 from a legit local gun and bait shop. All I had to do is pay for it when I picked it up.
Was told by owner that I can carry it but not conceal it.
What the hell has happened to NJ ????
I moved to PA in 2006 and went to county sheriff for CC permit and after paying $20 and filling out a form, I had the permit in a couple of weeks-quicker than other counties

Rejoice that you are not in Illinois. Many months' delays, on both issuance and renewal. Part of the problem is that the governor uses the firearms and ccl issuance and renewal fees to help "balance the budget" for the state, rather than letting the State Police use those fees for the administration and running of the system. Our legislature is predictably considering doubling the fees and halving the permit periods.

Move on down to middle Ga. I just renewed my permit, has to be done every five years. If you get it done 30 days prior to the day it expires or within 30 days after, you fill out the forum, get a new pic if you want, pay 30 bucks and in this county get a new one within two weeks. Yes you need to show drivers id and old permit. If you wait beyond, you have to get fingerprinted and a background check and pay 70 dollars.

Why would I need written permission from someone who doesn't even know me when I want to buy a gun?...When I find something I like and decide to buy it, I just make the deal, pay for it and leave...Sometimes there's a little paperwork to fill out first, but that only takes a few minutes...Folks are welcome to live under an oppressive thumb if they like, it's just not my way......Ben

Why trade one anti gun state for another? He only needs to go a few hours north and pick one of three states where constitutional carry rules, only criminals get fingerprinted, and you don't pay .gov $70 for a constitutional right.

In NY if you don't know the POPE it takes about a year.
Fingerprints, Reference letters, background checks and approval of a Judge

Amendments to the Lic take about 3 weeks (if your Lucky)

Glad I didnt marry our Mess hall Army cook back in the 80's ,she was from New Jersey and after we got out of the Army she wanted to move back to NJ near momma ,she would not move with me back home to West Virginia ,home of the free ,... boy glad i dodged that bullet . In W.Va as long as i got the money can buy it and take it home that day

I grew up around Asbury Park but didn't really get interested in guns until I moved out here. N.J. does everything it can to force you into compliance with their politics.
I married a girl who grew up out here. I know we could never be happy living there. We like our freedom, the easier pace of life, friendlier people and wide open spaces.
Hang in there, it may take awhile but you're tougher then all the paper pushers in the state. Remember them when election time rolls around.
