Getting a firearms permit / ID card in NJ

Things have gotten better and worse.

It is now much faster to get a permit to purchase a handgun. Used to be up to 6 months. My last handgun permit, before covid, was about a month.

Post covid, NICS checks now take 4-5 days. Before covid it was 10 minutes to an hour

Do they dictate the color of your underwear too? If they limit any constitutional right, it should be parenting. Too many kids are brought into this world by clueless parents and we wonder why we have so many clueless people. The main thing that I remember about New Jersey is that it gets better the further that you are from Newark. I had to wait a long time to pick up my last handgun. It took about 10 minutes from the time that I got in line to get to the cash register.

But can you carry your weapon loaded anywhere?????

“z” would be getting the pistol. That ever happen?

My experience from A to Z picking up a handgun for the first time:

With more folks then ever applying for firearm permits here, the local fingerprinting joint decided to further bottleneck the system by limiting firearms app appointments to a handful every few days. This has backed up the Identigo fingerprinting appointment availability to a month out or more.

Take that and add the additional month (or more) of waiting for the local town's police chief to review your application and you're sitting at a cool 8-10 weeks for a purchaser ID card.

Additional handgun purchase permits without the fingerprinting nonsense only took about 3 weeks.

Then after the background check for the firearm transfer ($65 at the range) we're looking at another 7-10 days.

And forget about a concealed carry license.

With all of the paperwork and administrative work required for a firearms permit in NJ, that must be one of the "safest" states in which to live as firearm homicides should be non-existent!

Rick, I too dread that interminably long period of time it takes to spot someone carrying a gun at a show, then talk to them, handle it and finally count out that wad of cash and shake hands...

Surely there's a less time consuming way......Ben

Moved to NJ in 1971. Bought a S&W mod 15 from a legit local gun and bait shop. All I had to do is pay for it when I picked it up.
Was told by owner that I can carry it but not conceal it.
What the hell has happened to NJ ????
I moved to PA in 2006 and went to county sheriff for CC permit and after paying $20 and filling out a form, I had the permit in a couple of weeks-quicker than other counties

I'm not sure where the owner of the bait shop got his information from or how he sold you that gun without a purchase permit. I was a Police Officer in Newark NJ in 1970 and there was never open carry or concealed carry there. Even as a Police Officer we had to get a purchase permit signed off by the Chief of Police to purchase a gun. The only people that could carry were off duty were LEO's, and we couldn't leave the state. If we were to go into NY other then on official business we were advised to check our guns at the local Police stations, or we could be subject to arrest. Luckily you were never stopped carrying because you would have been arrested.

New Jersey has an intention homicide rate of 2.9 per 100,000 and is ranked 35th of states and territories.
It is followed by the permit less concealed carry states of Montana(40), New Hampshire(41), Wyoming (44). Utah (45), S. Dakota(49). Idaho(50), Vermont(51), Maine(52). The 4 states with the lowest intentional homicide rate all require no permit what so ever.

I can buy or sell guns at a yard sale here with no permit needed. I bought one at a street fair here a couple years back. The Scouts, FFA, Churches and other organizations raffle off AR 15s around here. LOL

I lived in NJ for the 1st 26 years of my life. The official position is "common folks" should not have guns. "Organized gangs" like .Gov and criminals have different rules. Always been that way, always will be. Like the Wilbury's song says "Everything's legal in Jersey unless you get caught." Joe
