Biscuits and Gravy

And, I'm shocked at the number of you guys talking about how unhealthy biscuits and sausage gravy is. Honestly, who cares??!!! Done right it is the nectar of the Gods. Heck, I like mine with a side of bacon! It may not be on your heart healthy diet but we all have to let loose now and then.;)

My mother had a plaque on her kitchen wall that said "If it ain't illegal, immoral or fattening it ain't fun".

"It will be a better and healthier world if sausage was never used in that dish called gravy, or is it gravely with biscuits, and only used in Lasagna"
Quote from Chris Columbus in 1493. ;)

My AirForce Chef buddy always made it with beef .... called it SOS or chipped beef and gravy.

Agreed! A good buddy claims: "Ya gotta die of something!"

This discussion of delightful, unhealthy food, reminds me of my dad. He craved an old favorite, family meal; sliced potatoes, deep-fried in melted lard. He, occasionally, fried for himself, a meal of them, as mom refused to do so.

His family members, would fry several pounds of bacon, save the grease, and throw the grease, rendered bacon, in the garbage. That beloved bacon grease, was kept in the icebox, and spread on toast, and sandwiches, and used to season all kinds of food of that era.

To my dad's distrain, My mom, was many years ahead of her time, was, one of the first health food advocates.

You don't have to be a Southern boy to appreciate biscuits and gravy , but it sure does help . My favourite ? Biscuits and gravy and a couple of over easy eggs , don't get no better .

On a side note ..... used to work with a friend from New York State . We'd stop at the cafeteria on the cape for breakfast . I'd get a couple of over easy eggs , grits and bacon . He'd look at my grits and ask how can you eat those ? He'd ask what's a grit? Can you show me a grit ? I guess we all have our local favourites . What do they eat up North for breakfast ?

Thanks for this thread!

From just south of Portland, Oregon myself; the next county down.

I love biscuits with sausage gravy! Unfortunately I can't have them anymore. :( I never ate this on a regular basis, but would usually have it once or twice every two or three months for a special breakfast treat.

When I made my own I'd usually put split biscuits on the plate, add a side of scrambled eggs, top both the biscuits and the eggs with the sausage gravy, and then apply freshly ground black pepper and several dashes of hot sauce.

Sigh... I do miss this, and country fried steak with sausage gravy also.

I cant say 100% how my wife makes her gravy so i wont even attempt to try. but we have Biscuits and gravy for suppers then i eat left overs for the next day for work lunch .
Good stuff i call her Gravy, bumper gravy!!
it is good enough that even if it had to be licked off of Bumper it would be good

Every now and then I slice up a bunch of those little red potatoes and a
couple of Walla Walla sweet onions and fry them in un-salted butter.
Then about the last minute I throw in some eggs and stir the whole mess
up. I'm on a low sodium diet so no sausage or gravy for me. By the way
the Walla Walla onions are similar to the Vidalia onions you guys know in
the South.

Hah! I belong in the South, I figure. What do we eat up here in this household?
- Grits with hot sauce
- Cheese grits
- Shrimp n' grits
- Biscuits and Gravy (aka Belly Bricks)
- Sausage and eggs
- Lutefisk

Wut? Lutefisk? Just checking to see if you are reading. Despite being a Scandahoovian, I can't stomach Lutefisk. Honestly, I don't know how you even get your face close enough to eat it.

I have paid $3 for a granola bar rather than eat the FREE biscuits and gravy. My second option was foraging for berries. Actually eating the biscuits and gravy was saved for when I'd lost all hope and just wanted to end it all. Not a fan, to put it mildly.

Blasphemer! A pox on you! (But hey, everybody's gotta like something different. I HATE liver and onions!)

I don't like liver and onions either, but my Mother used to make liver patties once in a while. One evening for supper i ate 25 or 26 of her patties. Delicious. She kept asking where I was stashing them, but as long as I wanted more, she kept making them.:D

My mother loved liver. My father was fond of it, but my mother loved it. None of us boys could stand it. My mother once famously told my then 30 year old brother, who had left the liver on the mountainside after killing a buck, to, "Go back up there and get me my liver.". This entailed a 10 mile drive, a 400 yard hike and another 10 mile drive back. In the dark. Mom loved her liver.

I like liver raw - small/med chunk on the end of a large fish hook - catfish aren't picky.
