Springfield Armory's New Hi-Power

The Hi-Power feels so good in the hand, then the trigger feels like you are dragging a cat across broken milk bottles. Springfield getting rid of the magazine safety will go a long ways towards fixing that. The only other double stack nine that sits as well is the CZ-75. Most of the rest of that tribe vary from clunky to fat and boxy.

James Reeve's review, on TFB TV, was the only one who mentioned{at 7:15}, "The trigger reset is not as good as I would like...".That's an unfortunate consequence of eliminating the disconnector guts. I'm a weirdo who LIKEs said innards because of the quicker reset it provides, LOL.

My ratty FEG clone wouldn't reset reliably with the mag safety removed.

Winner, winner chicken dinner... SA is going to sell a lot of these. When I turned 21 years old I rewarded myself with a brand new all Belgium "beer can sight BHP. Since then it got several siblings. I don't need another BHP, but will be getting an SA-35. $700 is an absolute bargain for a forged steel, U.S. machined and assembled pistol. I am very impressed with the pics, articles, vids I have seen. Very impressed.

Now, if only Springfield could offer an H&K P7 clone for $1000... Yeah, I know, I am dreaming...

I've had a BHP since right after the AWB.

It's as cool a pistol that was ever designed, in some ways. If I had to be in a shootout, I'd take it over most guns out there and indeed most guns I have. I carry a G17 or G19 now, but I think BHP could hold its own in the L.A. Riots as well as those two.

For that kind of money, it's worth it to y'all that have never had one to get into it. Mec-Gar magazines are plentiful and excellent.

BHP was designed before hollow points, and some are finicky with feeding. Mine was always 100% even with the big-mouthed Sierra / Corbon loads, but mileage varies. They've probably tweaked this one to work better with more kinds of ammo, but if you want to carry JHPs, I'd recommend the rounder Federal 9BP type or similar.

The feed ramp on the HP was the issue with hollow points and stopped being an issue with the MKIII guns. I'm assuming Springfield has gone with that final feed ramp design, so it shouldn't be ammunition sensitive.

When I posted this thread I figured that some would be as excited as I am for this new pistol, but WOW what a response! :D
The Hi-Power is my favorite 9mm pistol. I currently own three. But as soon as I find a SA-35 for sale, I'll have four. ;)
The big thing these days is the compact, lightweight, plastic guns. I'm not sure how well a full size, all steel gun will sell. But that's ok. Just makes my chances of finding one better. ;)
Hopefully Springfield will do their usual thing and come out with fancier variations of the pistol. And if they come out with a Detective version, I'll buy one of those as well. :D

OH NO!!! Is SA gonna make me eat my words?

Springfield Armory has re-released the BHP, or at least their version of it. Its a modernized version of this second world renowned design of JMB, and it looks like a really nice one.
Im hoping since I dont talk much that nobody remembers my rant against the company due to their shinannigans lobbying against us ( the 2A) that they blamed their lobbying firm. Ive always said Id not give them a dime by buying any new firearm they make. Used guns are ok but not a new one because the profit goes right to them. But wow, I am really enamored with the new High Power, everyone is giving it the praise but Ill wait for some actual use before making up my mind. See what folks long(ish) term results and feelings are. The price is great too.

To any new shooters out there whove never held a BHP and experienced its ergonomics do yourself a favor and check one out if you see one at any of the local places near you. They are right up there with a CZ75. Great firearm!

I live in Cubafornia and that 15 round magazine is off limits. Except for Diane Feinstein who I was told by a clerk in the S.F. Gun Exchange in the 1980s that she bought a BHP from them before banning handguns in S.F. (Later overturned in court). I think this SA version looks real good.

I have owned two HPs in the past. One was an older 9mm and the last was a FN .40. Loved the 9mm and wish I still had it. The .40 not so much. The FN was picky about what ammo it would feed and in my 55 years of shooting handguns the FN had the hardest slide to pull back. I am a big strong man but that slide gave me fits. A women or a smaller weaker man would never be able to work that slide. Going to have to start saving cash and start looking for the new Springfield HP. Be the first gun that struck my interest in the past year or two.

Someone can have mine, as I'm not interested in buying one.:D
Had a BHP for a short time and got rid of it.
I have the Sig P226 that I carried while on the PD, and I don't need another 9mm.

Am big fan of BHP, because it just fits so well, and have several. My favorite is from first batch of imported Israli surplus. Mag safety removed, thin grips, recut barrel crown and slighted tightened slide (from putting in vise to adjust rear sight). Very accurate, but it just points where i want it. Only other mod to do is slightly larger safety. Would like detective version with extended threaded barrel.

Umm what now? Can you tell more?

The epoxied finish on the Israeli surplus version made rear sight adjusting difficult at best. Put carefully in vise to pin and hammer the rear sight over. Tightened the vise a little further than intended and slide got tighter. Not tight, but tighter than it was and still has slight play. That would be more than a couple 1000 rds ago, and attribute the tightened slide and re cut muzzle crown with noticeable increase in accuracy. Lucky i didn't ruin it.

Picture is before slim grips

Really hope they delve into stainless and a compact version. A HP “Officer” model is something the market could have used for a long time.

You can have a Browning HP and not give Springfield Armory any money. Rumor has it there are several hundred thousand examples since 1935, just waiting to be purchased. ;)
