KSP says the man, 30-year-old Gary Rowland of Murray, was arrested in Benton, Kentucky, around 1 p.m. on May 16. Rowland was wanted on charges of absconding from parole and drug and gun-related crimes. After the Marshall County Special Response Team arrested Rowland, he was brought to the Marshall County Sheriff's Office.

There, he was interviewed by Marshall County Deputy Donald Bowman and Cash ” who were both serving as part of an U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force ” in connection to a separate investigation, state police say.

KSP says Rowland asked if he could take a break from the interview to smoke a cigarette, and Bowman and Cash took him outside, in front of the sheriff's office. That's when state police say Rowland pulled out a handgun he'd had hidden on his person and shot Cash.

RIP Deputy Cash. Remember a few times that Officers did not do a thorough search and got lucky perps only tried hiding the firearm while using bathroom or stuffing it into the patrol car seat. Can’t be shy get get up in and under perp’s groin area. They hide stuff there hoping LEO won’t be comfortable grabbing another man’s junk.

You need to be tough and treat all suspects like they are serial killers. I once arrested a young, sweet, and nice looking prostitute. Gave me no trouble, was remorseful and respectful to police officers. While in the booking room (she was still handcuffed) I was gathering her property and took off her blonde afro style wig, a loaded .25 auto fell out from underneath the wig.

I remember a case in Austin several years ago where a female suspect had a S&W Escort (Model 61) stashed inside her body cavity.

When one is employed in doing dangerous work, carelessness, and complacency is unacceptable.

Since this terrible tragedy, can’t be reversed, perhaps it can serve to guide others, who are employed in all dangerous, work.

Very sad. Another prohibited person with a gun. I guess we just need even more laws. Disgusting.

As noted by OP no mention of an initial search or if one was done any subsequent search during change of custody. Truly a tragedy and one that has been repeated far too often. Complacency kills. Would be a good lesson in police academy’s. I remember sitting in an in service drug interdiction class being conducted by outside trainers. During a slide show we were shown pictures of a suspect who had duct taped a handcuff key to the small of his back. He had killed a police officer during a traffic stop several years previously. It was suspected he had been transporting drugs. Obviously should have been part of the trail to show premeditation. Do you think this information was ever shared with us previously considering the Police Officer who died WAS FROM OUR OWN DEPARTMENT???? We were appalled our administrators had not chosen to share that with us. Apparently it wasn’t important information…..

I suspect you were being sarcastic about needing more laws, but the fact is these folks doing all these mass murders and causing mayhem are already breaking multiple laws. Same for the criminal who shot the deputy, he was in custody for breaking the law already. :(

There is a video about 20 years old from San Bernardino that shows a suspect (under arrest for shooting at a cop, a 3rd "strike" for him) pulling a 1911 from his waistband (AIWB, as I recall) shooting himself. The reaction from the cops is pretty epic. It's never going to pass scrutiny here so I won't post it.

As for the woman who had a firearm in her prison purse, I have seen other reports and one of them had a K FRAME in there. Men have done similar too. There are no extremes that should be excluded from one's consideration of the possibilities.

About thirty years ago, it was the dead of Winter when one night I stopped a Jeep Grand Cherokee with three occupants, two of them sleeping. I noticed a Winchester 94 on the back floorboard as I walked up but I didn’t say anything about it. When I contacted the driver I immediately had a bad feeling about him. I got him out of the car and escorted him to the front of my patrol car (no cameras in those days).

I could tell he’d been drinking so I arrested him for DUI and he asked why he could do “those tests” (the FST’s). I cuffed him immediately and as I put him in the back of my patrol car he angrily said “I should have killed you when I had the chance!” I replied “You never had the chance” as I closed the door.

I radioed for assistance and there were no other LEO’s (other Troopers or Deputy Sheriffs) in service. I knew a buddy of mine, a K9 Deputy had signed out of service about fifteen minutes earlier and he lived less than ten miles away so I had them call him out. When he and his dog arrived, I retrieved the loaded rifle and woke up the other two passengers, one of which had a misdemeanor warrant.

After impounding the vehicle, I booked both of my prisoners. It turned out the driver was an escapee from a prison in Wisconsin. Being a Trooper, I processed him for DUI (of course) and he blew a .11. The only charge the Prosecutor’s Office even cared about was “Felon in Possession of a Firearm”.

I know the rest of you LEO’s know what I’m talking about when I refer to that “spidey-sense” feeling you get sometimes, you just know to not give them a chance to take you out...

Yes, sarcastic is my fall back point when faced with such evil and the stupidity of the anti gunners.

I remember this from when I was stationed in Calif. Was admonished to search all prisoners (male or female). The CHP caught a runaway 14 year old on the 405, they turned him over to a local PD Patrolman. He turned him over to the Watch Commander. He turned to kid over to the jailer. The jailer played by the rules and patted the kid down. He found a Model 19 loaded stuck down the kids crotch. He asked the others if they had searched him and the answer after some hemming & hawing was "No".

One of the courses I taught when stationed at NS Long Beach was search & seizure. Part of my lecture was to be sure to check anyone with long hair for items stuck there that could be used to harm or kill you. As an example I used a ladies hat/hair pin. Told the students if the pin was long enough it could be used to kill you. One of the sailors went back to his C.O. and told him I was teaching them to kill with a hat pin. His C.O. and my C.O. had a discussion and I ended up giving a personnel lecture to the C.O. No more problems after that he understood why I was teaching them to search and be through.

Civilians are required to go through the metal detector at that office.

It would seem to me that at the jail it would be a good idea to use a metal detector.

Civilians are required to go through the metal detector at that office.
A lady friend had business at that Sheriff's office a few months ago.
She and her purse were both properly "detected".

FYI - this is local story for Bekeart and his Lady Friend.

One of Ruthie's cousins is a PC. He told me years ago about an extremely hostile woman they were in the process of booking that had balloons that the Montgolfier Brothers would have been impressed with. A seasoned female Sgt was tasked with searching her and discovered a sleeved single edged razor blade engulfed under each one.

You just never know.
