I just acquired a very nice Radom P-64 (9x18) and the SA trigger pull is great, but DA is way too heavy. The de-cocker makes it perfect for carry with a round in the chamber, but that first DA shot makes for a struggle for me. Any suggestions?

Wolff makes lighter hammer springs. I did the swap on my P64. It made the DA "pullable"... but by no means "good" or "nice."

I coulda lived with that. But... it made the SA trigger feel kinda... "loosey-goosey." Very light. But not really in a good way? Still, carrying with the hammer down, it was serviceable as carry option, I suppose.

I will say my P64 was a tack driver, in SA. All the straight-blowback pistols I've owned have been, actually. That said, the actual Makarov pistol (PM) is my favorite out of all of them.

I actually traded a West German PPK for my East German Mak. Love the gun.

When I first got mine I took it completely apart and cleaned/smoothed everything internal up. I went with a Wolf 18# hammer spring. (17# is the lightest, 20# the heaviest.)

The double action improved a bit and is comparable to my other like pistols. The SA is noticeably lighter and smoother so I’m happy.

I read about the grip and decided to try one. Perfectly nice.

Just be aware everything is a trade off. Reducing the main spring not only reduces DA trigger force it also reduces the amount of force the slide expends when it cycles and cocks the hammer. Going too light can lead to frame battering over time.

It looks like the hammer spring is also the mag release spring, which is also very strong and hard to activate with the plastic grips surrounding it. The lighter spring should help with that. Availability of the Wolff spring is sketchy. Wolff has them but their website is giving me fits. This too will be overcome.

Thanks all for the great insight.
