I just opened a bulk case of CCI/Speer 9mm I bought a couple of years ago. Since it is loose rounds, I thought I would put it in some of the plastic boxes I have. I thought it best to identify the ammo in case I forget or someone else finds it after I am gone.

On the box is a bar code and a number and I am guessing it contains the lot number. I am going to make numerous copies of the number, bullet weight, etc. and put one in each box.

Does this make sense?

The actual lot number would be somewhere on the box, not under the bar code. Typically a number and letter combination. This may be impressed into the packaging and will need to look at an angle with variable light source to find it.

I just looked at a box of Speer ammo. Lower left hand corner on the bottom is "CCI/SPEER OPERATIONS" and under that is the lot number. In the (hopefully) unlikely event of a defensive shooting the lot number is a very good thing to have. If there's any funky lab results for gun shot residue, the powder used in the lot you used might be different from the exemplar rounds used by the lab. Was a factor in a shooting in my state decades ago. The ammo company's records showed the exemplar rounds had a different powder than that used in the shooting, invalidating the lab results. OK, it's rare, but it happened.

Reread OP, no idea where bulk lot number would be but should be on there somewhere. Isn't likely the bar code number, that'd be a stock number.
