Show Us Pics of Your Single Shot Rifles

Someone’s “like” reminded me to post a photo of the new-to-me 1977 Ruger No. 1-A chambered in 7x57 Mauser. Original red butt pad and no silly warning on top of the barrel. It appears unfired and the only flaw is some light handling scratches on the left side of the stock:

Here it is in the middle with my No. 1-B in .270 Winchester on top and No. 1-A in .30-30 on the bottom. I bought the .30-30 intending to shoot it but it is like new in box with the box and everything that came in it. 1 of 248 ever made so the guys on the Ruger forum convinced me to keep it in the house.

Just two - both Martinis. Haven't shot either in a long time.

A .310 Cadet I had rebored to .357 Mag.

I also have a .303 Martini, which came with a "sewer pipe" bore which was unsalvageable (as I found after ~2,000 patches and cleaning by electrolysis!) Had a L-E Mk.III barrel put on it. But the action needs a lot of work as it is really stiff and they're a bear to work on so kind of lost interest.

I'd thought of making a "Platypuss Martini" out of it - fitting a Mk.III forend and hardware to it - like this one, which belonged to a fellow in AZ (?) named John Sukey:

This is a British Trainer. It is a No.2 MK IV* in .22LR. It was made from a Lithgow N4 MK 1 made in 1941, It is a single shot and extracts the empties into the magazine shell (when it extracts properly). Easy clean up after range shooting. I put a Parker-Hale target rear sight on it and small globe front sight on it. Shoots fairly well off a rest.

Nice! Here's the late Queen Elizabeth - when she was still a princess - shooting a .22 L-E trainer (??) on a warship during WWII.

I collect late 1800's single shot Marlin Ballard, and Remington Rolling Block and Hepburn rifles. Have collected both for about 40 years now, but only collect Sporting models of the Remington rifles, and Ballard were only Sporting rifles.
Probably wont bore people with posting all of them as I have 3 safes full now. But here's a few pictures.

Enough for now.

Got word Monday that another single shot project I sent off to C. Sharps last year to get a new barrel is done! It's a Ballard #3F Fine Gallery I've owned for 30 years, and I got a heavy full round Green Mountain .22LR barrel for it on a sale last September for $90.
It's headed to Al Springer now for rust bluing the barrel, and color case hardening the receiver and breech block. Should be back here before the end of February when I'll do the final forearm and fit it, plus install scope bases for a old target scope. I had it roughed out before sending it off, but still needs final fitting and finishing.
I'll set the old barrel and forearm aside in case I or someone ever wants to restore the gun to original.

Finally got the Martini Cadet Mannlicher, nice wood on it. Someone did a nice job restocking it. Gonna shoot it next Tuesday morning, hopefully it will shoot ok. Changed the scope to a Weaver 1.5x with fine crosshair and a micro dot in the center of the crosshair.

The USPS Priority envelope the check was in sat in the St Louis post office for 13 days bc of weather??? Here’s a couple Pics, Larry

Fired the mannlicher Martini rifle Tuesday morning, long wait for everything. The scope mount is a Redfield and the windage can be adjusted with 2 opposing screws. Ran out of scope adjustment, need to adjust the base now. No correct screw driver at the club. Larry

Shoot and adjust and shoot again! Enjoy the range time.

The last single shot I had was a Remington 40XBR chambered for the .22 BR Remington cartridge. Strictly a handloading proposition then and a great Groundhog rifle. Mine had a Canjar LP trigger set to about 4 ounces, was pillar bedded by Fred Sinclair and was topped with a Leupold 12X (the older long scope) bumped to 24X by Wally Siebert.

The 40XBR model was the brainchild of Mike Walker when he ran the Remington Custom Shop. He had them ran in small lots and pulled the 40X actions off the production line before they were finished outside and stamped (except for the Ser No.) and had them heat threated before finishing then finish ground on an arbor to true them up looking for a minimum of 180° clean up on the bottom for bedding then polished and blued. because if the slight HT warpage that didn't clean up on top you often needed to either shim the bases or lap the rings for full contact. Mike also made sure some of the drills were removed so 40XBR actions do NOT have the gas relief hole in the side of the receiver as he thought they did nothing and they weren't going to put un-needed holes in HIS actions. The Model marking was silver Chem etched on the action since it was too hard to rollmark. The Stock is straight combed with a flat bottom foreend. At least that is how it was when Mike Walker ran things; after he left Remington started just taking regular 40X actions and roll marking 40XBR and selling them but they were no longer special any longer.

I sold it when I made the move from Ohio to Illinois in the late 1990's but it looked pretty much like this.

Finally got the scope adjusted on the new Martini Mannlicher in .22 lr. Found it likes CCI Blazer 22 over CCI Standard Velocity. Benching the rifle is crude at the club, would like to see slightly better groups. The scope is a vintage Weaver 1x with a micro dot in the center of fine crosshairs. All is good finally, Larry

A little update to my Ballard #3F Fine Gallery rifle.
uSgkl85l.jpg

I had this rifle for 30 years, and last November I sent it off to Al Springer for restoration. I also wanted a heavy target barrel to be installed and a Match chamber done. Al had C Sharps do the barrel work, and then he did his magic with color casehardening and rust bluing. The parts all came back today, and now I just need to assemble it all, and finish fitting a bigger forearm wood for the 27" x 1.25" full round barrel. Then D&T for mounting screw and put finish on to match the buttstock..

The inspector checking out Al's packing work.

Dark spots are just where oil touched packing and wiped right off.
