The ultimate Model 19/66 Combat Magnum thread

I read somewhere that the stainless-steel frames were heat treated to make them suitable for magnum loads.

Where did serial number go from my 66-2 "the safe queen"?
Why and is it common?
I bought this revolver from a Finnish gun shop in the 1990s.

Since the round butt Models 66 & 19 shipped with magna stocks that did not cover the butt serial number, it was not stamped in the yoke cut.
This changed about 1993 when they shipped with Uncle Mike grips which did cover the butt serial number.

Thanks!
My 66-2 is AWWxxxx = 1987
Again I can learn more of S&W

I noticed your 1979 19-4 target version has a different front sight than my 1978 19-3 with standard trigger and hammer. Mine has a ramp sight with no insert. Does anyone have any information on the target front sight?

Patridge front sight was standard on the 6" Model 19, even with the TT/TH.
RR/WO only was not offered for the 6". It was offered with all the bells; TT/TH/RR/WO but not just RR/WO.

...except for the City of Los Angeles 200th Anniversary commemorative...

Would like to see your 6" with ramp front sight and no insert.
The 6" barrel on the Model 19 did have the ramp pinned to the base well past when it was on the 4".

Front sight on M19 6"

Thanks for the information. I'm sorry, I did not mention my 19-4 has a 4-inch barrel. The patridge front sight would make sense on a 6-inch barrel.
Question- what does RR/WO stand for?

New guy here, learning to navigate this site and post, anyway here's a 66 no dash I just got. Rear sight is stainless so it's fairly early.

Beautiful complete package. I doubt the grips originally came with the gun. Would suspect the factory would have shipped it with checkered target grips, but the smooth presentation grips look nice.

Box is marked T. I suspected the grips weren't factory but I bought the gun anyway. :D

My oldest kiddo chose my 2.5" Model 19 Combat magnum to use as her "working gun" when she was cowboying.

She was wrangling, running pack strings for an outfitter and guide in the Frank Church Wilderness and other areas in Idaho. I set her up with some snake shot for the early season, plus some 170 grain Keith wide meplat SWC hardcast .357 magnum loads. This is a commercial load that I produce, and it has always been very accurate and guys have reported that it has done very well on game. No surprise there, as the bullet was created by fellow Idahoan Elmer Keith himself.. :)

There are no shortage of bears, lions and wolves in the country she works plus the horses themselves are always a danger as you don't want to get caught up and dragged in a wreck .

Those served her well. I figured she was in very good hands between the gun the ammo and old Elmer looking over her shoulder as the country she was working in is his old stomping grounds.

This is a Poly Coated 158 SWC .38+P. Due to the fact that you can run Poly Coated bullets even faster, at lower pressures than hardcast (similar in concept to how you can run hardcast to faster speeds than jacketed loads, with lower pressures). the load is running at 1115 FPS from a 4" barrel. I tested this against some big name brands .357 and it actually equaled or bested them in velocity testing using 4" guns.

Not to be used in a .38 Snubby J Frame, but for a K Frame, it is an outstanding load, and what I keep my Model 15 loaded with. Freaking tack driving hammer. One guy who uses these in his revolver has been using them for Whitetails and with good success.

I have been loading this for a while now and it has been a pretty popular load for knowledgeable shooters. I think it is the optimal load for a K Frame .38 Special like a Model 10 or Model 15.
