How best to sell most of my guns.

Same as above ^^^^^^^^^^^

I’ve been offing some of my guns lately, meaning selling them. :) A couple have sold on brand specific forums and many on local NC gun boards.
I use shipmygun. They provide a shipping label, you insert a copy of a valid govt issued ID, such as a DL. The cost is half or more than any local FFL. All I do is attach the label and drive .8 miles to my UPS store. Yes the stores accept firearms now.

To add, buyers FFL might not accept from a non FFL. I tell buyer to find one who will.

I guess not surprising to find others in this boat but found this thread interesting because I have been wrestling with the same dilemma lately. Between aging out and losing interest I need to do something with my S&W collection before my family gets stuck doing it. Moving them one at a time myself is way too time consuming and tedious. Im thinking consigning to an auction house is my best option but I really want S&W collectors to get first options on them.

If I sell on this forum, how does that work. I take it to an FFL and they ship it to an FFL where the purchaser picks it up? How much should I expect the FFL to add to the cost? I understand that it would be “paid” by the seller - e.g. I sell it for $100 and the buyer pays me $125 to cover the FFL, but that still factors into the negotiation/pricing. As mentioned, there’s no way I’d sell it except through an FFL or to a CPL holder here in Michigan. Anyway, please explain some of the details.
When I have done that the seller pays the transfer fee on his end (about $35 here) and then the buyer who picks it up also pays a transfer fee to the FFL at their end (again about $35 here). I recently had to sent a revolver back to S & W for warranty repair and Smith paid for everything on both ends. They emailed me a prepaid Fedex label and I shipped it directly back to them. Usually they could return it directly back to me but in this case they had to replace the frame which had the serial number so it had to go to a FFL to fill out the 4473. If one doesn't have a WCL or CCW depending on state there is also a background check. I have a WCL and since it was a warranty repair the FFL didn't charge me anything. But that may be the exception not the rule. But Smith told me they would refund the transfer fee if they did. But this can all vary due to local and state laws. For example, my son is a Deputy Sheriff. No Transfers are allowed into or out of where he lives in Virginia so he has to go out of his locality to do any transfers (Next town over). WTF? So one has to check into what is allowed or not.

I'm not fond of the whole shipping/banking thing, but selling them on a forum is definitely the way to make some money, and see them go to good homes.

I've decided that I'm just going to announce a giveaway, and have NC residents drive by my house. I'll just throw one through the car windows as they drive by until I run out; whatever you get is what you get. :)

I'm in a similar position. Hitting 80 in a few months with not great health. I probably need to start listing things because I have no one to leave them to and my wife would not know what to do with them if I passed. Problem is that I open the safe and see too many things I hate to part with.
I feel for you but we’re all going to be there at some point hopefully it will work out well for you

You could post a comprehensive list here. Some of us have FFL's that would allow you to deal more or less directly, and those that are C&R eligible (pre-1975, currently) have a broader audience. Also, a lot of your answer depends on which State you live in. Good luck!

I'm looking for ideas on how best to go about selling my collection (and I use the term loosely ). I have 4 revolvers, an old 22 browning pistol, 2 Glocks, and a couple long guns that I just want to get rid of. Unfortunately, I can't remember the last time I shot any of them and don't see me doing so in the future. So, I'm looking for a good way to handle getting rid of them. I'm pretty sure a pawn shop would be the easiest but would yield the least amount of money. Alternatively, selling them individually would be the most time consuming and likely result in the best amount of money. Is there something in between? I'd like to deal with one person/company and be done with it. Something that would give me a fair amount of money for the least amount of trouble. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I plan on keeping my tactical shot gun and will buy a nice 45 pistol for the night stand but with that, I'll have ammo that I won't have a gun for and will want to get rid of that too. Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Not sure where you are located but if you are in Texas there is a free (they also take donations) web site you can use. Texasguntrader . com.

Cabela's is about an hour away. Seems like it would be worth the drive. I'll give that some thought. Thanks for the idea Papaorca and for the details brians356.
I would call them first, make sure what their current policy is. Best if you talk to one of the guys in the used gun section, who should ask you what you have.

I have told my wife if something happens to me to call the local auction house I have dealt with. They do a couple of firearms auctions each year. A lot from estates where they hold the firearms from estates until one of their firearm or sportsmans auctions. Many auction houses now have auctions that are online and reach a large audience. Sellers fee is probably in 20% range. Several years ago Va. passed laws that restrict private sales w/o a FFL doing a background check. Private sales by renting a table at a Gunshow are a thing of the past here. When I started accumulating that was my plan. The tired old “Gunshow Loophole” issue.

I've bought and sold a few on Michigan Gun Owners Forum. https://home.migunowners.org/
I've always worked out face to face deals and haven't had any issues.

Also every time I go to a gun show I bring a gun to sell (usually a long gun)' I put a big tag with a short description, Price, and walk around with it. The shows here in MI don't charge extra to bring a gun in, They just check it at the door and zip tie the action so it can't be fired.

I sell guns in my garage sales also. In fact I'm having one this weekend. I always post a sign "All state and Federal laws apply" and haven't had any issues. I always get return customers from sales that I had in the past.

Jerry...there is a very reputable dealer who is always seeking collectibles...of any size. His name is Randy Hale, in Hayesville NC...you can find him on Google if you wish. Several widows from my local Church have used him and were very pleased with his service.

I’ve been present when people bring guns into my local Cabelas. All they do is look on Gunbroker. Take lowest price and give you half.
Fair enough, but a second-hand account and no details. Anyone personally received offers from Cabela's?

Ok, I watched them offer a guy $125 for a like new Kahr CW9. It was not my gun. But it doesn’t change the fact that it happened. I traded a Baby Browning 25 once. Gun Library Mgr went on gun broker while I stood there. Not sure what more you want ?
