I just took delivery of a S&W model 29-10 6.5 inch barrel new from the factory. I had both hands on the grips and simulated a recoil quickly raising the end of the barrel. There was a disheartening feeling in my hands as there was movement between the steel and wood ! At first I simply tightened the grip screw and it actually made the looseness worse. Removing the grips I found there was way too much wood removed at the cutout for the steel grip. I made a .070 shim out of a large black quick tie and installed it. The grips are tight now but I am going to replace them with Altamonts and give them a try.
One other thing about this gun. Someone at the factory slipped with a screwdriver in the slotted screw and buggered the screw head leaving a nasty burr that a cleaning rag would snag on. I removed the screw and buffed off the burr. Re-blued the screw and reinstalled. This was after I ordered a new screw which was $2 for the screw and $10 bucks to ship it from another gun company (not S&W). Then it was the wrong screw! I have not shot this 44 yet but will soon.

It's definitely a buzzkill when things aren't the way they should be from the factory. This has always been something of a background issue with Smith & Wesson through its various owners, but it seems to be even more common recently. I know - I just bought a new 66-8 that had an obviously misshapen rear sight blade that somebody had to have noticed but apparently said "eff it" and installed it anyway. On the plus side, I learned how to replace a rear sight blade (it's kind of a PITA but not too bad). ;) Fortunately, it's usually relatively small stuff. Congrats on the new revolver and I'm sure that once you get it squared away the initial disappointment will fade.

Instead of trying to fix the issues yourself make a call to S&W customer service. They will probably send a replacement screw and possibly new grips too. I needed replacement grips for a S&W 500 I once owned and they sent a new set promptly. BTW, IMO, Altamont has always been hit or miss on the fitment of their grips and you'll more than likely want to replace them with something more comfortable.
