If You Could Only Own One Smith & Wesson… What Would It Be?

Model 327 TRR8 is actually my only S&W. (My other handgun is an old .22)

Chosen for home defense because it's a 357 magnum full size N-frame revolver (my preference) with 8-shot capacity.

Also relatively light weight (scandium frame) with picatinny rails. And fast reloads with moonclips.

It would be a 357. Not sure if it is a 28, 27, 19, or 586.
I carry the 19 around my place. I’m not positive that it would handle a lot of full power loads.
I’m thinking it would be one of the larger frame revolvers if I had to have just one.

Only one...sheesh. Harsh, harsh world. Thankfully, it's only imagined.

I'd give up my 625 MG in .45 Colt that I've carried for countless miles through town and forest due to expense of shooting, and lack of flexibility. Same with .45 ACP revolver. I'd let go of my 617 .22 LR due to it being a bit light in bear country. That narrows me to my .38 Special/.357. All .38 Special only would go due to lack of top end power. That leaves me with....357.

L frame is a good choice, but I really do dislike the full underlug, for no rational reason short of weight. I have one that would PROBABLY be my choice if this were for real due to sentimental/family value.
K frame is a real solid choice also, and entirely respectable. I shoot .38 Special 90% of the time anyways. It would be mighty hard to go wrong with a 19 or 66 with a 4" bbl.
N frame...The Model 28 with tapered barrel just feels...right. I do got alot of love for it. I just love the way it feels. If This were the gun I had when the music stops playing, I would not be upset, but...

My single, end all be all, only S&W would be my 327 R8. It's the N frame that I love. I enjoy feeding it via moon clip, The low end .38 Special is well suited to smaller game, and a hardcast 180 grain is a fighting chance against dangerous critters. I do love that when bipedal defensive ammo comes into question, most any .357 mag hollow point seems just fine. It is light enough to carry on the regular, large enough to grip, and point well. And in this hypothetical, dystopian, nightmarish world that only allows me a single S&W pistol...an 8 round cylinder ain't heart breaking to me.

Now, in this dark world of one Smith & Wesson, I didn't see a limit to parts. Since the 327 barrel works like the old Dan Wessons, I think I would take me a 2"ish barrel for concealed carry, and a 4" barrel for all around use. I dunno if they make a 327 barrel that's 4", but...they oughta.

5" 38 Special M&P from the end of WWII up through a 5" model 10-5. Superb balance and excellent dynamic handling qualities. 158 grain semi-wadcutter at close to 900 fps will handle everything I need a sidearm for. Carries comfortably in a Bianchi X15 Medium shoulder holster.

If you could choose just one Smith & Wesson firearm to own—whether for personal defense, fun at the range, or collecting—what would it be and why?

Would you pick a classic like the Model 29, a reliable Shield Plus, or something unique?

What's your must-have Smith & Wesson?
If I was limited to one Smith & Wesson it would have to be the Model 19, preferably a 19-3 with a 4 inch barrel. The Classic will do, but would much prefer the older versions. The K Frame, especially the M19 is extremely versatile, large enough to shoot comfortably, small enough for concealed carry, as well as the ability of shoot 38 Special target loads all the way up to Buffalo Bore Hard Cast 357s and everything in-between.

Whenever I see a minty old 4" Model 28 Highway Patrolman, I long for the one I once had ( though admittedly, mine was not so minty). But still, that's the one that speaks to me the most.

One of my mistakes I corrected. Many, many years ago I traded a very nice 4” 28 for a stainless Ruger Old Army. I enjoyed the Old Army but pined for the 28. I did buy a nice “S” serial 6” Model 28 along the way but still wanted a 4”. As luck would have it the guy who I traded the 4” to put it on his table at our local show. And for far cheaper than Old Army’s were selling for by then. So some Benjamins changed hands and my 4” 28 came home.

But if I had to pick just one S&W it would probably be my sweet little 3” .357 Model 60.

Probably my 10mm 2.0. With rounds for hunting, defense, practice, and heavy loads in bear country.
