My youngest completed her fifth year as a Chief Surgical Resident at her Hospital today…….Its been a long road with many challenges in it, but She persevered…When She graduated FSU , She did a lot of Volunteer work ,including the American Cancer Society fundraising activities and than volunteered to go to South America to provide Health Care for the People in the Jungle…That pushed a few buttons when we didn’t hear from Her for two days….I was digging out Utilities, (they don’t fit anymore) and my Best Friend was determined to “go to the woods” with me to get her back…Got a call from the Resident Agent advising these groups routinely go to the jungle and all return safely, but no cell service there….She called her Mom the next day….

She was accepted into FSU college of Medicine and graduated in 2020…COVID prevented normal graduation and She was at the Daytona Campus…We drove up and watched the virtual graduation and I took Her and the Wife to New Smyrna Beach and stopped at Heavenly Cafe and got Maine Lobster rolls and we went to the Beach and sat at a table on the Boardwalk and had Graduation Dinner…. Improvise, Adapt, Overcome….

She’s applied for Fellowship programs in Oncology and hoping for a match in Florida or close by. Proud of my Baby Girl…She’s 31 and got Married in 2022. She’s expecting in September, A Boy She’s naming after my Dad.

Let me add my heartiest congratulations as well. I'm very familiar with what it takes to achieve what your daughter has, as one of my granddaughters is the same age and is following a similar career path. She received her MD in 2020 from the University of Kansas Medical School, did a three-year residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and is entering the final year of her three-year fellowship in pulmonology at THE Ohio State University Medical School Hospital, where she is also a clinical instructor.

It's astonishing to realize what it takes these days to fully train an MD. In my college days, it was four years in med school plus a one-year internship. Now it takes twice as long. So my hat's off to your daughter, my granddaughter, and all of those who successfully navigate the rigors of present-day medical training.
