Were you law enforcement in the 70’s-80’s? What did you carry?

Started in 1980 with the State Highway Patrol. We carried the mandated, agency provided, worn out 4 inch M10 HB with CCI Lawman 125gr JSP +p ammo. About 1985 or so we turned in the old M10's for brand new M681's but continued to carry the same ammo. All leather gear and uniform equipment was provided by the Patrol, which was a huge plus.
I was in the OSHP Basic Police class, Basic 42 that began in January 1980. There was a trooper cadet class that started around the same time, were you in that class?

I was issued a 10-6 when hired. Around 1983 we upgraded to 586 and then Glock 17 around 1989.

I was supposed to start with that Academy class but I was living out of state at the time and my background investigation got fouled up by the out of state Trooper who got assigned to check my out of state references. Wound up starting in class #108 on May 5, 1980.

Small world.

S&W Model 15 at my first Department and 158 grain LRN Federal for on duty and 158 LRN reloads for qualification and practice. Was #2 for Academy Top Gun. A few years later found out the #1 shooter actually used a pencil on the target. He was being terminated for falsifying Reports and that came out. It should have been obvious since he never shot higher than Marksman after graduating.

After probation I got a variety of different revolvers. Python because you all know why, status. 19, 686 (my favorite) and a 27 as a Reserve on the County Posse.

Second Department S&W Model 659 and I was the Academy Top Gun with it. Upgraded to 5906 and then the 4506. Later a Colt Government Model.

So cleaning up the gun locker today and got my S&W Model 57 (no dash) 41 MAG out to clean up. I purchased it as a blue steel new in the box with target hammer and wide target trigger when I was on Embassy duty in West Germany in 1975. The wiesbaden Air Force Base had a gun store back in those days and of course we always hit the gun store when we had to pickup supplies. I really wanted a model 29 (thanks Dirty Harry), but they we just impossible to get then.

When I got out of the USMC in 1978 I was hired by a small Midwest police department- they furnished everything but your underwear, boots and gun. The gun requirements were it had to be 38 special or larger, Colt, Smith & Wesson, or Ruger and you had to be able to qualify with it. If you carried a 38/357 Mag the department supplied you with a 1000 rounds of 38 WC reloads per year. So the training Sgt found me a well worn N Frame holster and I was off carrying my 41 mag.

Factory ammo was very expensive on a cops salary so most of us were carry our own reloads on duty- I settled on a Lee cast lead 240 grain SWC (Elmer Keith recommendation) with a gas check and pushing about 900 fps. Speed loaders on my belt had 210 grain jacket hollow points loaded hot to punch through vehicles was the idea.

So after about a month of wearing short sleeve shirts and the Model 57's checkered target hammer rubbing the skin off the underside of my arm- it became a bobbed double action only Model 57. A few months later I had the gun Magnported and not only did it help with recoil but helped my night shooting scores go up.

Summers in the Midwest getting in and out of air conditioning was tough on blued guns in leather holsters, so I sent it off and had it and it coated with a new metal product that was being used on oil drilling bits- sorry can't remember what they called it. No more surface rust- yea.

I carried the gun during my tenure as a city cop and later as a Sheriff's patrol deputy all the way until I made detective- it was too heavy to wear in a shoulder holster for a 10 hour shift in plain clothes.

So for all you old timers who were cops back then what were you carrying? In the Midwest in the 1970's and 1980's and the agencies I worked for it was most S@W and Colt, and folks were very vocal about what they carried. Lots of Colt Python guys and lots of S&W Model 19, 27 and 28 guys, I also loved the 3 inch round butt Model 13 heavy barrel when I was a Detective.

Cheers,

Jeff
In the 80's I was with Harris Co. Constable Pct 6. Carried a nickel 6 inch S&W 25 45 colt.

I started out in 1967 as a plainclothes deputy sheriff in Minneapolis (Hennepin County) and I carried a Smith & Wesson model 36 no dash in a three inch barrel for several years Then in 1970 I went out to a suburban police department (Brooklyn Park) in uniform for 21 months and carried a Smith & Wesson model 10. Then I made detective in 1971 and went back to my three inch model 36 no dash for 20 years until the police department decided to issue our handguns, a glock 22.

Well Jeff (usmcsgt) this thread you started sure has gotten a great response. It's good to see how many former LEOs there are on this forum. I have really enjoyed reading what firearms were carried in other members duty holsters and thank you to everyone who posted photos. Maybe we should start a new thread where we post photos of ourselves in our respective uniforms when we were rookies back in those good ole 1970/1980 days.

Started in 1984 and was issued a S&W 686. Was able to purchase it when they switched to Glocks. The 686 was and is a fabulous firearm. My second agency switched from Glocks to S&W 2.0's in 2018 and never looked back. Easier to fight and teach than the 22-degree grip angle of the Glock. An ergonomic and natural pistol.Another great handgun for fighting.

When I started in 1979, I was required to purchase my own equipment. The Sheriff advised that we could carry whatever we could qualify with.
So,,, my 1st duty revolver was a 4" Model 29 in nickel. What a great weapon; loaded with 200 grain JHP Lawman rounds.
In a change of 'employment' we carried Model 15 Combat Masterpiece revolvers with direct support and training provided by S&W themselves.
When I commissioned with the State, we started with Model 10 HBs, followed by several changes through the years, eventually moving into semis.

Started the SCPD academy in the Fall of '82. My issued handgun was a Model 64 4" in a Jordan holster. It was loaded with 158 +P SWCHP and we carried 12 extra rounds in dump pouches. Thereafter we transitioned to an S&W safety holster and SKS speed loaders.
In 1990, when assigned to the FTS as an instructor/armorer, the department went to the GLOCK 19 and the issued ammunition was Federal Hydra-shok 124+p+. We carried two extra magazines in addition to the +2 magazine in the pistol.
Back up and BUG were up to the individual officer so long as you were qualified with it.

Reserve academy '88. My own GP100 (4") and 3 speed loaders. Had a Python and a 686 but felt the Python too delicate and I could shoot higher scores with the GP due to the staged trigger - even though I preferred the double action pull of the 686 for quick work. Used whatever brand name JHP 38/38+P that was on sale. Transitioned to a G21 (45ACP) in early 90's.

When I came on the department in '78 officers supplied their own handguns. .38 or .357. Most had older model 10's or 19's with a couple of Colts. (One carried a beautiful 6" Python). I bought a used Ruger Security-Six and a new Charter Undercover as an off duty gun. The next year the department issued new 4" model 66's and required officers to carry them. The Python owner was allowed to continue to carry his Colt since he was close to retirement. I sold the Ruger and Charter to a reserve officer and bought a new model 36 to carry off duty. Ammunition was left up to the individual officer. I always carried S&W 125g JHPs.
