Home Defense Shotguns

I currently have the top one...old Winchester 1200 leaning against my headboard. Probably replace it with the short Wingmaster. It is nice to have options.

I am planning to sell my Vang Comped 590A1 after I get my medical crap out of the gun room and can reorganize some stuff. Nothing wrong with, but I broke my left shoulder (I'm a lefty) and it took a surgical repair (take it from me, don't do that; not griping about the medical care, but the experience sucked to an extreme). It will probably never be right, so I'll stick to my BCM ARs, Wilson AR9G (Glock mags) or .357 Marlin.

Other than on duty, where I used issue 00 buck, I used only slugs and 000. It's just us and the dogs, and there is little risk of over penetration with these loads and our like. It has an RDS, sling, and Surefire front end with a nice bright light. I concur it is generally a barricade weapon.

This is a poor picture, sorry, but I bought this Tokarev 12 gauge semiautomatic for a home defense tool, but the dang thing is just too heavy, maybe 9# empty, which isn't a lot, but my J frames are a heck of a lot easier to grab & shoot from my bed if I have to. Maybe if I have time to get up and load the ten shot mag in it…I think it has a ten and five round mag for it, but I'm not trained to wake up and grab the gun and defend myself or my wife or dog. I wasted my money on this gun, actually.

For home use, load with #4 bird shot, follwed by a few # 2 bird shot and last few are # 4 buck.

I am OLD, so I have many. Having grown up as a farm boy trying to wear out my uncle's 870. I was issued my first 870 in 1977 in the state police. I have a couple in the house in cruiser-ready condition. Here are a few of my favorites. I consider a shotgun a GREAT Combat weapon and Brown Bear protection.

The mention was made of a HD shotgun loaded with slugs & Buck in an extended magazine being awkward.

Don't know if awkward is the word I would use but my 12 ga. 870 as described above started to become a bit heavy as I get older.

Went in a local gun shop and saw a like new in the box 20 ga. 870 with extended magazine at a very reasonable price.

It left with me.

Budding problem solved.

Mossberg 590 Shockwave with magtube loaded with Federal Flightcontrol 8 pellet 00 Buck, Chamber empty with side saddle loaded with same. Hanging in a bandolier case from headboard. In a gun safe in the closet is a Rem. 870, magtube loaded with 6 Federal Flightcontrol 8 pellet 00 Buck and a Velcro card loaded with another 6 rds of same 00 Buck.
Neither have a round in the chamber due to most pump and semi-auto shotguns not being drop safe, even with the trigger blocking only safety on.
No one else in the house but me and my 2 cats so I have no problems keeping these loaded around the house when I'm home but they all are locked in safes whenever I leave the premises.

That looks like a very aggressive home security cat. Not sure you even need a firearm 😁

I have a Mossberg 590S.

Borrowed this pic off the net.

Holds 13 rounds of 1 3/4 mini shells. Double ought buck or slugs at 1300fps.

Will also shoot 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells. And you can mix and match.

M-Loc rail with a light and side saddle.
Any reliability issues with the short shells? Do you need the Opsol attachment to run them? I use one in my 500 & 88 just for fun. I don't want to trust a hunk of rubber if needed.

I have always been curious about the thought processes for those who choose a shotgun for a home defense firearm.

Do you keep a shell loaded?

If you do not, then you will pump a shell in. When you pump a shell in it will make some noise, probably a fairly common sound, that will 1 – give away your approximate location, or 2 – scare the b-jesus out of the perp(s) and he/they will exit the premises at warp speed. There are always other scenarios.

The weight and size of a loaded Remington 870 Express Tactical at 8 to 9 lbs. doesn't seem very wieldy?
Purely defensive only and the best at that. I wouldn't want to go searching my house with a shotgun in tow.

Mine for a long time was a 97 Winchester pump riot gun loaded with No. 6 shot. If the sound of a shell being racked into the chamber didn't give an intruder a sudden lust to be elsewhere, the birdshot at any reasonable range would incapacitate him without punching through walls.
