5 Screw Highway Patrolman, hope I did alright on the deal.

If the hole bothers so, since it appears that those are not the original stock anyway, sell them and buy a set of the correct ones for it. Enjoy it; it's very nice.

Wow! Nice condition!

I have a 73-74 6" in stellar condition. Would not sell it for less, that is certain.

Although I am going to an Estate Sale tomorrow where there is a 4". If condition is equal to what I see here I'm bidding!

You did just fine! A 28 is the same as 27 without the lipstick! If you want a collectible that sits in the gun safe because ever time you handle it you devalue it then you got the wrong gun! If you want one you to use and go up in value, you just did it!!!

Great price for what appears to be a nice condition Mod 28. Drilled hole in the grips doesn't happen to line up for access to the strain screw does it? From the pic, it appears a bit high for that. Regardless, I would not sweat the grips.
Was thinking the same thing. I don't know why folks think that screw is an adjustment screw. It's made to be screwed down tight.

You did great on the price even given the non-original and ventilated stocks. Most HP's shipped with Magna style stocks, in this case most likely high horn diamonds. They're still around but getting hard to find! Were it mine I'd be looking for diamond football target stocks, mostly because those fit my hand like a dream!

If that hole bothers you, they make wood putty in many different colors. You can probably match the stocks.
If you fill the hole with putty and then need to remove the stocks, the putty will either crumble or it will have glued the halves together, making the stocks difficult to remove. I'd take a hardwood dowel that fits snugly in the hole and glue it to one of the halves after carefully fitting it and sanding the end to match the curvature of the stocks. Then take something like a honey pine or walnut stain and stain the end of the dowel. It will match the stock color close enough.

OP:

I can send you a couple small pieces of goncalo that you can shape to fit each panel. You don't want end grain. A little color from a wood marker will blend the color or you can add a streak of color. You'll barely know they were repaired.

I have had a six inch Highway Patrolman for decades. Generally, I buy guns to carry so I am typically a 3-4 inch barrel buyer. But this thing shoots 158 grain .357 Magnum loads like a rifle. It quickly became my "killing gun" around the farm to dispatch pests. You have a very useful tool there!
