( This posting is a bit more about New York City firearms dealers in the 1920's and 1930's, than about the two short-barrel targets in my collection. The gun shop, in this story, was owned and run by a retired NYD PD officer, who primarily handled M&P's for LEO's, and particularly for the NYC PD. The two top-of-the-line revolvers in the story were seldom sold to Police Officers, and so unusual for the store. )
George F Herold was a NYC PD Officer who, on retirement, took over a gun shop across the street (Center Market Place) from the NYC PD early headquarters. The street had several gun shops on it, and his became known as G F Herold Company, The company was a large distributor of guns to Law Enforcement entities, and dealt mostly with the M&P configuration. He also dealt with target revolvers, and this story is about two short-barrel revolvers that went to his store, one in 1934 and one in 1937.
The first two pictures are these two guns; one is a 4" S&W, and the other a 4 1/2" Colt Officers Model .
The next two pictures are the factory letters for the guns.
The next picture is of George dealing with customers inside the store. Presumably these men were NYC PD officers from across the street.
The last 4 images are two stories, of two pages each, about the neighborhood back in the 1930's.
Note: Jovinos was a 5 Centre Place, Frank Lava gunsmith was a 6 Centre Place, Herold was at 7 Center Place, and the NYC PD was at 240 Centre Place.
