I decided to buy some 200 gr wadcutters for my 624 but my die set only has seating plugs for round nose and semi-wadcutter. I was thinking about getting a second semi-wadcutter plug and grinding the edge off of it to make it flat. Am I wasting my time doing this?

Buy a 1/4" -28 TPI bolt, chuck it in a drill, use a coarse file to make the hex head round. You will now have a "universal" wadcutter seater. If you round it off to fit 38 special, it will work in larger calibers.

I got disgusted fighting with seater plugs, that I bought 5 bolts and rounded the hex heads to fit all my seater dies. End of a lot of problems with cast lead bullets.

You can also fill the cavity of one of the stems you have with a hard hot glue , let dry, sand flat and use. The hot glue can be removed easily when needed.
I permanently alter seating stem profiles with epoxy plumbers putty, the epoxy cures hard and the first one I did, round nose plug changed to wadcutter profile, was over 20 years ago and I'm still using it . I'm sure the epoxy putty could be removed also, so it is long lasting but not permanent .

Sweet idea.
I will steal this idea and use it for .38 and .44 WC.

Thank You!

I'm on my way to Home Depot right now to get the bolts. I'm tired of the wrong size seating plugs putting a ring around the top of my wide flat point lead bullets.

Thanks for the great ideas.:) I will be loading wadcutters without deforming the bullet in no time.:D

In a pinch you can put candle was in the seater plug and use it,
it will last for hundreds of rounds, when your done with it just peal the wax out.

Am I missing something here?

How do you screw the 1/4 x 28 bolt into the seater die?
The threaded hole in the seater die is too big. RCBS dies.

I would think what you have would work just fine; have you tried?

If you typically shoot semi-wadcutters just turn the rim off that seater plug, it will work just as well for either then.

Tough luck!

I think you have newer style dies that have a 3/8-16 (?) threaded hole in the flaring die and the seater die. Try to find a bolt that fits or file the end of your seater stem flush/flat on the end.

Sorry old reloaders have old die sets, 1975 to 1983. My only new die set is 40 S&W. I use the 9 MM shell plate and 38 Spl buttons on my Dillon -- never bought the conversion kit.

Die sets are never safe from an engineer that tinkers and has a tool & die maker for a shooting buddy. I used to get anything I wanted -- even if it was a dumb idea.
