win231 with 124xtp 9mm load

I am confused with the available data for 124 grain xtp's with win231. Hornady does not show data for the xtp but for the 3558, FM fps, starting at 4.7 grains to a max of 5.3 grains.
I am loading the xtp. 124 grain with 4.6 grains of win231, with a coal if 1.07 inches.
Am I good to go with this load or am I too hot? Any experience with we 124 xtp's and win 231 would be appreciated.
I don't understand why hornady removed and reference to w232 with 124 bullets from their manual

That does not look too hot.

I have been using 5.1 grains of 231 behind the Winchester 124 JHP or the 125 Hornady HAP for 30 or more years now

I think your load of 4.6 grs of 231 is fine. Speer #13 manual lists a load
of 4.5 grs at 998 fps with their 124 gr JHP. But obviously 231 is not the
best choice for velocity as Speer shows HS-7 at 1249 fps with 8.9 grs
and Blue Dot at 1238 fps with 7.9 grs.

The OAL of 1.075" will work with most JHP 124gr bullets and wit w231 powder
I can get a 3" to do 1063fps and a 5" 1166fps with a full load of powder.
It can get to a nice SD loading but nothing to brag about.

It does best in my weapons, .3-.4 grains above the starting load, for my target loads, that are quite accurate, with no feeding problems.

My 3" likes 4.2grs at 942fps for a light target loading with a 124 FMJ at 1.14"

I have been using 4.5 Gr 231 with a 124 JHP (not XTP) for a couple years and it chrono's about 1100. Nice to shoot and accurate in various of my 9mm's.

4.7 gn W321 under a 124 gn PRN and 1.150 COA = 1095 fps in my Kimber 9mm 1911.

I use 4.5 grains W231 under the 125 XTP @ 1.09" OAL, great target load in my Kimber 9mm 1911.

My Hornady manual is out in the shop and it's raining, so can anyone check their manual to see what loads are suggested for the 9mm XTP?

FWIW, and I suggest this to all new reloaders I encounter; my Rule #1. I pay no attention to any load data I see on any forum or "pet loads" web site, hear from any range rat, gun counter clerk, good intended friend or gun shop guru. I get 99% of my load data from published reloading sources, with a bit from on line powder distributors. I've been doing this for 35+ years and had one squib in 1970 and no Kabooms.

Later. Ran to shop between rain drops and got my Hornady Tenth. No W231 loads listed for 124 gr. XTP. But 12 other powders listed...

One hint; I find a load in my manual(s) before I buy or gather components...

OK, going back in time, a 1980s era Hornady manual does give 5.2 gr of 231 as a max load. Added edit: listed COAL is 1.060 in.

A 1999 Winchester manual lists a start load of 4.2 gr and a max of 4.5 gr with a 124 gr RNFMJ with a pressure of 32,700 psi. However, I've found the Winchester manual to be exceedingly cautious, probably due to really tight chambers and barrel tolerances.

However, current Hodgdon data from their website is 3.9 gr start, 4.4 gr max with a listed pressure of 31,900 psi. Bullet appears to be a plated bullet which would help account for the lower pressures. Again, this would be in a pressure barrel in a universal receiver.

Seems like 124 gr bullet & 231 isn't a real good match in 9 mm.

One thing about loading a 124 or 125gr 9mm bullet, is that you need to know
the make and shape of the bullet to find the shortest and longest, safe OAL.

Hodgdon list the Hornady 125 HAP at a OAL of 1.069" for its data.
I have found that 1.075" works in my 5" barrel with light and full loads.

However I have a "Rag" that shows pictures and charts to where a FACTORY Nosler 124 HP is set at 1.048" !!

When using "Ball type" powder, one does not want a compressed load........
unlike some Alliant flake powders that have a cut off do to case volume.

Hodgdon recommends a Max charge of 4.8gr W231 under a 125gr Sierra bullet but more than a full grain less under the Hornady HAP bullet so a charge of 5.1gr W231 is probably way over pressure.

For 124/125gr cast bullets I charge between 4.0gr to 4.4gr W231 (mostly 4.0gr) and with a 124/125gr FMJ/JHP bullet between 4.6gr to 4.8gr W231 (mostly 4.8gr). I usually load a slower powder with jackets bullets if not for practice ammo.

I don't usually give out load data but.......

with a 124 FMJ "Ball" type bullet set at a long 1.12" OAL
I have used 5.1 grains of w231 in a +P 3" pistol for 1044fps
and with the 124 gr Gold Dot this charge gave me 1068fps
with a 1.12" OAL.

With the Gold Dot, Unique gave me 1140fps and Blue Dot 1229fps, just to give you some added loading info.

Out of a 5" pistol these slow powders really add high numbers over faster w231 powder.

W231 does well against Bullseye, Green Dot and CFE pistol in matching fps and pressures in my loads.
Just depends on what pistol I am shooting and the fps loads that I am shooting to see a slight difference in accuracy, if any, for my target loads.

With a 9mm, if it goes "Bang" , it is usually close to where you aimed.
Tight groups.

Lots of new powders & better choices for running jhp than w231 so manuals change. Your load is pretty mild.
