Alliant American Select

Was in my LGS today looking for powder and primers. No small pistol primers to be found. But, they did have a selection of various powders. I normally use Unique, Power Pistol, Tite Group and in a pinch Bullseye. They didn't have any of those in stock but they did have a few jugs of Alliant American Select powder. It's a shotshell powder but the container says it's good (they used the term Great) for pistols. I bought two 1 lb containers to add to the stash as things are getting scarcer and scarcer. Anyone ever used the American Select powder for pistol yet? Any words of wisdom, comments good or bad? Alliant Powder - American Select

The Alliant data for the 38 and 9mm runs very close to what their Red Dot powder gives me in my revolvers and pistols.

The amount is a little more, so maybe it is a ball type powder or of a finer grind "Flake"?

I have been using it for years. You can't use it with a hbwc and be safe. Other than that it is a great powder and a favorite 38 special load with bnwcs. I shot this target with a dewc out of a S&W model 52 in 2012. I love it and super clean.-----------------Another load that works in my 2 1/2'' 19-5 at 25y.

Why won't it work with a HBWC? Besides SWC I also use Berry's HBRN bullets. Haven't loaded any with the new powder yet, I've only used Unique for the HBRN in my 9mm and 45GAP reloads.

American Select burning rate falls between Red Dot and Green Dot. Similar to V320. Grain size is like most Alliant shotshell powders. It will measure well with a quality measure and good technique.

I use it and Green Dot interchangeably for 9mm, .38/.357 (mild loads), 45acp, 45 colt, low end .44 magnum, and 40S&W. I have an older Alliant manual and if you pm me with your caliber and bullet choices I'll send the Alliant data if in the manual. It is a flake powder and just one up on the Alliant burn rate scale from the Green Dot.

It's a very good 45acp target load as well.
Very accurate, clean, and usually well priced.

Thanks. I found their entire reloading manual on their website a couple hours ago and downloaded the entire manual.

At 3.2 of American Select I blew the base off of Remington hbwcs 2 out of 10 shots but not with 3.2 of Bullseye. The base of the hbwc is in the case. 750fps is about the limit for a hbwc to shoot accurate. There seems to be more of a spike at 3.2 of A.S. over Bullseye. I have some Star and 3D hbwcs with never a problem so maybe the Remington is a little softer. They were .360 and would not chamber in my Clark 38 special so I had to resize to .357. They work fine in a wheel gun without sizing.

Buy American

American Select is one of my favorite Gun Powders.

It is very Clean, Burn Rate is fast, and usually reasonably priced.
I use it in my Revolver Cartridges.

For Reloading Data use Alliant's Guide, and other reputable
sources.

Most accurate 45acp loads I ever loaded, were with Green Dot, and Select is pretty much the same thing. I think it was 4.0grs, with 230gr lead RN. Smokey as hell, but Dead Nuts at the range!

A.S. is very clean. More than likely the smoke was the lube. I run my 45s with 4.5 of A.S. when I use it.
