I started to reload 9 X 18 mm Makarov (I have a Russina Makarov handgun) since I cannot find 9 mm bullets and brass for my Smith and Wesson MP Shield gun. I had ordered from Graf and Sons what I thought was 9 x18 but when the brass came it was "9 mm Ultra Police brass." On the other hand, when I had ordered from Starline 9x18 brass, it specifically says on the package "9 mm Makarov brass cases." Yet the 9 mm Ultra Police Brass and the brass from Starline look exactly the same. Can I safely use the 9 mm Ultra Police brass for 9x18 mm reloading?

Thank-you

The 9mm Ultra is simply a lengthened version of the tapered 9mm Kurz (.380 ACP) with a standard 9mm (.356") bullet. The 9x18 Makarov uses a nearly cylindrical case and 9.2 mm (.363"-.365") bullet.

My best friend likes 9x18Mak. He trims 9x19 Lugar (Parabellum) by 1mm, and the case mouth expander makes it fit the larger diameter bullets. After 3 or 4 firings he leaves them on the floor at the range, for the next guy to enjoy! Over the last several years he has convert a few thousand.

Over 20 years ago I bought the last box of factory loaded 9mm Ultra in Ohio, but can't find the gun! (At least at a price I'm willing to pay!)

The 9mm Ultra case is just a hair longer than the Mak case, and of course the Mak bullet diameter is greater by 0.01". I am surprised anyone is still selling 9mm Ultra brass. At least in the USA there would be no more than microscopic demand for it. It might work in a Mak pistol if loaded with the correct bullet diameter.

To my knowledge neither the 9mm Ultra nor the .380 are tapered. Other than that I do believe the Ultra is basically a long .380.

I too use 9x19 Luger brass and trim it, but I sure wouldn't
leave it at the range for someone else to pick up.... It's still
marked 9mm Luger and nobody knows it's been trimmed
back to 9x18. Someone loads it thinking it's luger brass,
and he could have a very dangerous reload on his hands.

After doing research, I have a bad feeling that the Ultra 9 mm brass that I expanded and primed will need to be discarded for the 9×18mm Ultra (.355-inch caliber) is not interchangeable with the 9×18mm Makarov (.365-inch caliber), as the latter uses a larger diameter bullet. When I ordered the 9x18 mm brass from Graf and Sons, they shipped me 9 mm Ultra Police brass. I see that there used to be a 9x18 mm German gun (that uses 9 mm Ultra Police brass) which is not the same as the Makarov. Wish I had known this!

I, too, convert 9x19 to 9x18, a simple enough process. Run it through the 9mm Mak sizing die, trim to length, run through flaring die. The case will have something of a wasp-waist appearance on the first loading but will fireform fine when fired. I haven't had a single issue with any cases.

I would suspect that--possibly--the Ultra cases, if run through Mak dies and seated with the proper .365 Mak bullets, would be fine, at least for mild range use. The expander die should have opened the case to the proper .365 size. If the rim size of the Ultra matches either the 9x18 Mak or the 9x19, it should work. Make up a dummy round or two and see how they feed and chamber.

I use MO Bullet CO. LRNs for my Mak loads.
