Hi There,

Welcome to the Forum!

There is something wrong with your identification. Your Grand
Father's revolver looks to be a S&W .38 DA Second Model (based
on the cylinder and trigger guard). The Fourth Model serial num-
ber range is 322701 to 539000. What is the serial number?

As to parts, there are a few places that have some parts for
these old DA's. You can contact Jack First Gun Parts and/or
Lee's Gun Parts. Make sure you have correctly identified the
model type before ordering parts. Also, there may be some
hand fitting required (sometimes).

Cheers!

Parts

eBay has the DA side plate pretty cheap. The hammer shouldn’t be hard to find either but you might be missing more parts than you think. I’m not seeing the hand that rotates the cylinder or da link. Definitely a second model. The action on these is not easy to fix with the double locking bolt design but putting it together would look much better.

Question: When you pull the trigger does the cylinder rotate and lock up.? It should without the hammer engaged. If it doesn’t you are missing a lot more parts than you think.

Thanks for the responses and correction on the model. I have posted the serial number which is hard to make out. The action works ok.

Hi There,

Your serial number looks (to me) to be 81967. This places your
Grand Father's .38 DA near the end of the 2 Model serial number
range (4001 to 119000). The Second Model was made from 1880
to 1884.

Cheers!
