I got off early Friday and was home in the reading room when I recieved a call from a co-worker who had just gotten off and was going home and stopped at a local pawn shop. He said he saw and N-frame Smith and knew i liked Smiths and the price was right. I ran right down and now I'm the proud owner of a 3 1/2 inch Registered Magnum. It was very dirty and had holster wear from the muzzle to the reciever but it did clean up nice. Shipped in 1936 I would love it if it lettered to a Texas Ranger. I talked them down from $450.00 to $350 plus tax. I would love to post picture but have no idea how. It will have to wait until my grandson visits to get done.
I recieved my letter from Roy today. It said, Registered Magnum 1136 was shipped 9 June 1936 to the President, National Bank of Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Records indicate it was shipped with a 3 1/2 inch barrel equipped with Call gold bead front sight, square notch rear sight, blue finish and checkered walnut Magna grips. This revolver was sighted in at 25 yards with .357 Magnum cartridges, using a 6 o'clock hold. This order was for 2 units both in the same configuration, Reg. No. 1136 and 1137. Boy, wouldn't it be great to find this revolvers brother because this one didnt wander too far from home.

An RM for $350.

I am amazed when I hear such stories because I wonder how an FFL dealer could be so foolish as to not clearly ID what he has for sale and winds up selling a $3,000 gun for $350.

Then I feel worse for the poor schmuck who sold it to the dealer for $200.

But if I saw a 3.5" RM in a shop tagged at $450 I would sprain my wrist going for my wallet. No bargaining would occur.

I have dealt with this pawn shop alot over the years but I learned early on I was not responsible for their education. I paid alot for mine. Like many pawn shops when the manager deligates his work to minimum pay peersonnel something falls through the gaps. This establishment had a reputation of being overpriced but lately they seem to have all new people. The registration number is 1136, serial number is 48xxx and according to Roy shipped 6/1936. This is all I know until I get it lettered. Who ever own this pistol used it, it had barrel and upper frame holster wear; it was very dirty outside as if when not worn it was in a glove box.

I have learned that the seller, be it a dealer, or private individual is ALWAYS THE EXPERT. You can only train monkeys to do so much... Why waste your time trying to educate the "Superior" ones? I'm done with that crap. They price it as they see fit, it is up to us to snag it unless it is some widowed gal trying to sell the collection of a lifetime. There are standards. Kyle

Sounds like an old duty gun to me, it's probably worth double that even in well used condition. The 3.5" RM's are probably one of the most sought after S&W's out there!

If it letters to a Texas Ranger it would probably put the value over $1K.

Good find and nice friend. Looking forward to your photos.

I am working on the photo problem. As for my buddy at work I have a Remington 788 in .222 he has been lusting for that he will be really surprised how cheap it got. I went back and looked at my reciept to see if I could figure out what the pawn shop thought the revolver was and all that was on it was S&W .357 Mag, revolver and the serial number. It did have a bottom price code on it but it doesnt fit any codes I have. it was udd?

So a typical 3.5" RM will bring $700?

Can I come shopping with you and grab the ones you don't want?

No way, super cool. I guess you owe your coworker buddy beer for a year. Can't wait to see the pics.

And by the way, I think it is absolutely hilarious that you dickered for $450 RM. Very nice, gotta love it.

I can't wait to see the pics. What a find and a great deal. I recently acquired a 4" Pre model 27 from a local shop. I had been mismarked as a 3.5" and the worker who is a friend and fellow LE insisted that it was a 3.5" gun. It lettered as a special order 4" gun. I did not feel that it was my responsibility to educate him about a gun that he was selling as a consignment for someone else.
