Been kicking this idea around from some time, I've tried a few other stock ideas on this little revolver and decided to give John and Jennifer a shot with some magnas. I wanted to give Holly a try and this is the end result. I will be test firing to see if this feels better than my last attempt and at any rate, these are some beautiful magnas. Well done folks...

Beautiful pairing!

Obviously a cut barrel but the sight and hammer have a familiar look. Have you done a thread on this one before?

Yup, This is a work in progress, got the hammer from another member. I have been waiting for quite awhile for these to come in and in the meantime had experimented with stags.

Beautiful revolver Kinman, love the look! I like the look of white on blue too! Here's a 1976 Series 70 Gold Cup wearing John's American Holly panels.

I've never seen American Holley grips before. Would have bet they were ivory...
Have a few sets of simulated ivory and a set of "Micarta" grips on a Ruger ...
Love that American Holley...

Oh you guys! You're making my mind work. (not an easy task at times.)

In another post, I asked about simulated ivory grips for a Gold cup. I got lots of good ideas. On member suggested American Holly.

I think this thread has moved me off high center. American Holly it will be.

Anyone with Holly on stainless?

Lotsa Teak and Holly on yachts.

The Ruger has some whites with a Mexican birth year silver coin.
Made from .5mm dyed white hardwood veneers and West System marine grade 205/206 epoxy. Yellows a bit with age.

Made the 1911 in the late '70s from dyed white Birdseye veneers, same epoxy and put some away for my 16.5" barreled No.1H's butt and forearm.... but some newer veneers with,
"a whiter shade of pale", may be used for that, a No.1V and a BT99.

Gotta love white on blue.
Snow Dragons if Big Bore. :D

At first look, I thought they were ivory stocks as well. Beautiful pairing.

John that is my single most favorite S&W pic ever. Beautiful revolver, grips, background - everything that is perfection. Never gets old or surpassed which is saying something on this forum!

That is a beauty for sure!!!!You know, I like what I am seeing enough to put holly on a lot of my guns, but I have already gone down a path of other beautiful woods

In defense of Ken's great work on those elk stocks, I believe they have found a new home on my very early 1917...

How long has "Holly" been used for grips ?
Does this wood come from the Holly trees/bushes that we use for Christmas decorations ?

Wow! This is an old thread but in answer to your question, Yes....American Holly comes from the same tree/bush we associate with Christmas decorations. Its tricky to work with especially timing the cutting, drying, etc. Its a fairly hard wood and the trees or bushes can produce trunks easily in the 20" range, we don't see them that large out west or at least I haven't. It was used extensively to make piano keys in place of ivory and has been known as poor man's ivory for many years.

Kinsman,

I am reopening this thread because I just got a set of Holly Magnas from a forum member. I put them on my Model 1950 Army revolver.

No idea who made them, but, they feel great in my hand.
