Here's 57 I bought in 1978. I had the factory fit a 8 3/8th inch barrel to it which was serial numbered the same as the gun.
You could get that kind of stuff done back then.

I have a 6" bought in the FRG in the early 80's with presentation case. I took it to our local qualifiying range one time. Only ammo I could find was in a German shop and it was 25 USD a box (Remington, IIRC). The target of choice was a large 1 liter glass Coke bottle filled with water at 25 m. I hit it on the 2nd or 3rd shot. Only thing left was the metal cap.

The old German who ran the range was always helping us poor GI's out so we let him have trigger time on whatever we had (M16's, M60's, M1911A1's and whatever POW's we brought out). In all my time in the FRG, he was one of two Germans I met who admitted to fighting against Americans in WWII. He hated the Russians (he'd been on the Eastern Front and was missing toes and fingers from frostbite) and made sure he surrendered to the Americans.

Also have an OMBH with 4 5/8" barrel and a 657. Love the 41, especially since I hand load for it.

57

Sorry, no pics. I have a blue 6 inch 57-1 and a nickle no dash 4 inch with smooth grips.
The 6 inch took a while to find. The 4 inch was given to me by a friend. Given. A first for me. He fired 18 rounds from it, cleaned it and put it in his safe where it stayed until he gave it to me. Came with a box of WW with 18 rounds missing. Sticker on the box read $27.95.
Been searching for the 8 3/8" for years.
The few I have seen were waaaay ove priced.

I do load, most factory ammo I see lately is over 1 dollar per round.

I had a 57 back in 1974 and later two 58s. All gone now. Since joining this forum I have been painfully reminded of all the good Smiths I've owned but didn't keep. Sure hope I'm getting a little smarter with age. (smile)

A 4" blue Model 57 and a later 6" nickle 57-1. Thinking of trading one away for a Model 58 project I have in mind.

What year was this made?

My pard has a 57-1 four inch with a serial number of N90 31XX. Can one of you forum guru's tell me the production year? Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge. Sprefix
