When I buy guns I always buy 2 when they can be found locally. I have one model 17-4 Smith and I love it. Accurate, slim, feels good in the hand, points naturaly, but getting hard to find and afford. My question does anybody here have a DW in 22 and how is it's accuracy. I used to have a 357 DW and it was super accurate but was a silhoutette gun with a long!!!!! barrel 12" I believe if my memory serves and as such was very heavy so I sold it after owning it for awhile. I also don't really care for the cylinder latch rerlease in front of the cylinder since I'm a SW man first, but I could live with that. I know DW's are solid revolvers but I have never shot one in 22. Those I've found are cheaper than model 17- 18- 617- ect. Any thoughts. I have 2 children is why I buy 2 of everything. The"re shooters and I love that.

No experience with the DW but I hear they are decent. Just never liked the triggers on the center fire revolvers.

That said, I'd hold out for another mod 17 just to keep things even. Remember, the kid that settles for the Dan Wesson may be the one that picks your nursing home!

This is only one choice for me, the Smith and Wesson is the way to go.

I am a great fan of the Model 17 and would always choose one first. That said, I have a Monson-made Dan Wesson .22 and it a very accurate revolver. Either gun will serve you well.

Dan Wesson 22

I just have to add my 2 cents worth here. Back around 1990 I was getting interested in shooting IHMSA .22 pistol silhouette. I was shooting a Browning Buckmark with 10 inch barrel with good results and wanted to try revolver. At some time about then, Dan Wesson brought out their 10 revolver in .22 with 10 inch barrels which were supposed to have been specifically made for silhouette. A friend and I each bought one (his was blue and mine stainless).
They were the absolutely worst shooting revolvers I ever had the bad fortune to experience. When fired from sandbag rests with good target grade ammo (several different brands and types), neither of these guns would consistently shoot under five inches at 50 yards. Now and then a good group would happen, but usually the shots would be all over the target.
I had mine less than a year, sold it and bought a Freedom Arms .22 and was far happier. I did hear that DW fixed the problems at some later date, but I would never own another one.

I have a few K-22's and a DW with a 8" barrel. My DW is very accurate, but is VERY big and heavy. It's fun to shoot on occasion, but I much prefer the S&W. YMMV

It wouldn't be hard for me to decide. I've had a 35 year ongoing love affair with K22's.

Get the 22 Masterpiece. They are the best. There will be less for your boys to argue about. I have 2 K-22 Masterpieces. Oh, but wait, I have 6 kids and 3 sons. They all shoot. Hmm you've now got me thinking, get the Dan and send me the phone # for the K-22.

Hold out for a K22.

My bias should be apparent from my sign in nick-name. That admitted, I owned a stainless Dan Wesson 4 barrel revolver pack and I think the design has a flaw that is more significant to .22 rimfire double action shooters than the design’s lousy double action pull. It lacks a functional gas ring. Lead fouling accumulates on the surface that stops the cylinder from moving further forward adding drag to cylinder rotation, and to clean it out you must disassemble the revolver to restore the double action pull back to its normal lousy but serviceable condition.

Single Action shooters have enough leverage rotating the cylinder that they are unlikely to complain about this and great accuracy in rested SA fire is what Silhouette shooters loved Dan Wessons for. I had to remember how many clicks to move the rear sight up or down with barrel changes otherwise mine did not have a problem with grouping ability but I’m not the greatest bench rest shooter anyway.

For double action rimfire shooters there really is no substitute for a K22. My favorite stores have new ones back in stock again and I expect the prices on used ones will settle back down in a while.

Best Regards;

Gil

As much as I collect S&W's and I own a nice 5 screw K22. Get the DW.

They are built like tanks. Mine has a great trigger pull. It is accurate, easy to shoot and just hangs well in your hand. It is by far the most overbuilt gun I own. I would never sell mine.

My Model 17 has served me for over 30 years and is so delightful that I'm not even interested in experiencing a Dan Wesson.

The Dan Wesson is a very heavy 22. It doesen't matter if you have a tapered barrel (lugless) or a full lug barrel the gun weighs alot. I like mine with the 4" barrel installed and rarely use the other lengths. I originally bought it because of the hype around the barrel being stretched was supposed to help accuracy. They're neat guns but I perfer to shoot a model 18 any day. :)

X2......... dont like them AT ALL.

I've got both a Dan Wesson 22 and a Model 17. I give the edge to the Model 17, but only VERY slightly. The DW is a bigger, heavier gun, more like a "L" frame than a "K", with a longer trigger reach in D/A. In S/A it's not such much an issue.

They both shoot great. I do shoot the 17 better, but I think that's as much sights as anything else. The trigger on my 17 is a little better, but it has been "worked."

When I got my DW there was a big difference in the price and I have been throughly satisfied with it. It may not be "as good" as a Model 17, but it's darn close.

For an idea of the size difference.
