Questions on Model 66

I'm looking at a very nice Model 66 no dash that has the box and accessories. It was originally equipped with Target stocks that are now missing.

The questions I have are,

What would be a fair price for this gun?
How much would I expect to pay for the correct stocks?

And finally, do you think these might actually be Ropers?

Sure do look like Ropers, if they are then the grips are probably worth more than the price of the revolver.

Looks like a well cared for 66. Should be able to get a pair of 70's era targets for $50 or less.

Stuck in CA here, so can't give you any real guidance on price, but in a local shop the 66 would be priced from $400 to $600.
 
I got my 66 used for 350, I think that's a little lower then most for a gun in great shape.

That looks like a beauty. $500+-. Probably +++ in that shape.

(Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten)
 
I think I paid around $550 for a NIB No Dash 66, it was missing some of the docs though.....
 
If the rear sight is original to the gun, it could be an early model 66. My early 66 does not have a red ramp front sight. The serial # will tell you if it is an early one.

The early ones are worth a little more to some people.
 
I did not check out the serial number on the gun but I snapped a photo of the box.

I'm not finding a online resource for production year on Smiths. For Colts I just go to Proofhouse.com and can usually find the information I need.
 
Yours is a little older than mine meaning that the rear sight is original to the gun. The box indicates something different than the standard all stainles front sight. It appears that it is referring to the red insert. This is quite possibly a special order making it even more unique and probably more scarce than those with all stainless front and rear sights.
 
I stopped by the gun store today to make a payment on another gun and to inquire about this Model 66. I was actually the second in line for the gun. My guy tells me " I guess the other guy didn't want it but I was off yesterday and when I came in today it was back up in the display case"

He snagged it for me and set it aside so that's cool. "Do you still want it?" he says. Of course says I.

He pulls it out from behind the counter and its now wearing service Magnas. ***!

Oh well, he is still holding it for me till he can talk to the owner and find out what the story is. He has no idea what happened to the stocks.

I think its still a good buy but if its got the wrong stocks I would rather have the others even if they are not ropers.
 
That 66 looks great and I value it a little more since it comes in the original box. I would ask about the Ropers.

I saw a 66 in a local store last week that comes with the box. They were asking $549 but said he had a little room to move. I saw a few 66's today in a different store that had a little more milage on them for $450-500 and likely don't come with the box or anything.
 
Just got off the phone with my guy at the gun store. He talked to the owner and the "Ropers" were on the gun to show the owners friend. It's priced at $450 with the Magnas. I can get the "Ropers" for $40 if I want them.
 
I put some money down on it today.

I also bought the "Ropers" outright and am starting a new thread with pictures of them.
 
i responded to your question about the grips. have never seen a box with two colors of ink on it. rear sight is correct and i feel the front has been changed out. the all stainless sights were a real problem to see if it was bright out. a lot of people in my area,mostly cops on the early guns changed the front sight. i don't see how you can go wrong with the price and i would buy the "ropers" for that price anyway. factory target grips won't be as comfortable to shoot as those would be.
 
You will love it. A true combat handgun. Very accurate. I would love to have one in the barrel length yours is. I have a snubbie but still can whack'em and stack'em.
