I have several old model 10 and 64 K frames and have been
thinking about converting one of the 64's into a round butt.
Has anyone else converted one of these and if so any tips ?
I am a decent machinist and a very skilled tig welder, and I have
a couple of factory round butt K frames and it seems rather straight forward but you never know.

I have converted N-frames to round butt.

Brownells sells a set of blocks that mounts on both sides of the frame and makes it a breeze if all you have is a bench grinder.

Just make sure that you will not alter or destroy the only serial number on the firearm. this would be a Federal crime.

If the firearm in question has the serial number in two places you are fine.

I've converted several K rames and N frames from square butt to round butt. The only tricky part is deepening the strain spring hole and shortening the strain screw. Also, leave them metal a little proud before final finish, as the backstrap has a slight radius to it.

As colt saa said, the placement of the serial number on the butt is the big issue. Take a pair of round butt Magna grips and put them on your M64 and scribe the frame slightly. If grinding away the metal would get into the SN, I wouldn't do it.

Square-To-Round

This 66-2 is a PD trade-in that I round butted in 1992 or so...

It is also the most accurate .357 I own and my favorite 'Trail Gun' for here in the North East.

I did the rough work with a belt sander and finished up with hand files and polishing cloth...

Blending the back strap properly after removing the grip strap serrations is tedious work, but the time taken to radius the profile is well worth it.

If you have average skills and a good eye, you can undertake this project.
Just go slow and watch what you are doing.
