I could use a little help with this one.
I recently acquired this nice 10-5.
Serial # C6013XX which should place it about 1961 if I am correct.
Standard barrel and serial# diamond magna stocks.
But, it has a lanyard ring!
No other markings which would indicate military or police issue.
Question is "Who would order a lanyard ring as an option but not stamp some sort of ownership marking on it?"

We furnished and installed hundeds of genuine factory "Lanyard" rings on Smith & Wesson and COLT revolvers in our many years as a gunsmith in New York City.
These were done for Motor Cycle and Mounted officers as well as a number for men in the Emergency Service .
Unfortunately we cannot supply serial numbers or officer names as all records went to the NYCPD when we retired as a gunsmith.

Like the Tired Gunsmith said, when a son went from patrol to Highway they just installed a lanyard ring on his 10-8HB. His loop hole is after the Ser#.

i have one with the laynard ring..stamped on the backstrap is RHKP for royal hong kong police...remember though many many police weapons are not marked in any way

L.T., did you acquire that revolver in Canada (looks like your posted there)? May be a an RCMP gun. I seem to remember them having lanyards on their revolvers in the old days. I don't know if they were marked in any way, though.

Yes this fine 10-5 was acquired in Ontario, Canada at a recent Gun Auction for $150. Up here it is considered a prohibited weapon and is only available to those who have a prohibited license(which you can't get anymore).

As far as I understand the RCMP and OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) both marked all firearms as police ownership.

It is truly a sad state of affairs when a Model 10 is deemed to be a "prohibited weapon."

Government is the bane of humanity.

Any guns with a barrel lenght of 4" and shorter are prohibs here in Canada since they passed that law back in 1998. Only current people that own them during 1995 and 1998 were grandfathered under the class 12.6 rule are still able to purchase them. All guns before 1946 can be willed down to our next of kins and the rest either get sold off or destroyed..

Too bad we couldnd sell South of the Border to much Politics i guess

Thanks Rigmover
Your details on the 12(6) are right on. It helps to inform our brothers to the south of just what can happen when we allow a government to steal our rights and define our private property as "Prohibited".

If we could sell to the collectors in the US, our prices would be more in line. A recent auction saw some pieces going for as low as $15. Just no one to bid!
