Hello, New to the forum and wanted to ask about my revolver and plus P ammo. I don`t know how old it is but the serial is 24K82XX. I want to make sure it is safe to use this ammo before firing it with it. The gun is in excellent mechanical condition and we fired 300 rounds of regular 38 specials through it today. What do you think folks? Jim

It's my understanding that if they are model marked they can handle +P. That said I would limit the +P in the lighter bullet weights like 125 grain if it were me because they seem to be the hardest on K frames.

I give up.

Really... I just give up.

The most successful marketing hype causing mass hysteria in history.

Too bad the guy selling +P didn't work on the New Coke account.

Me too, I know what you mean. Between +P questions & wanting to ask when a "common as dirt" S&W was made, it seems there are a dozen new threads a day asking the same old questions. Hey, I'm old & grumpy, though, & what do I know?

Like others have said, +P 38 special is safe in you model 67. And like Saxon Pig says, +P is marketing hype.
Regards,
Howard

OK so I`m new to the forum and didn`t just jump right in to searching for a thread on this subject. Thanks to the two members who responded so kindly. I appreciate your help tremendously. As far as anything else maybe I just wont ask anymore questions, I`ll Google it first.

Martinfender don't sweat it......some folks that live their lives strictly around this forum you would think could just not post if they were so exasperated with questions they feel are insignificant .....sheesh I get tired of reading their damn condescending comments and honestly most others probably feel the same..... you are in good company in most cases posting questions here and I will 3rd the fact that it is perfectly fine to shoot +p stuff from your model 67 with confidence....shoot it and enjoy it. I shoot almost exclusively remington 125 gr hp +p from both of my model 15s' with good accuracy and joy!

Your very nice revolver was made about 1977.

As far as ammunition goes, Plus-P .38 Special isn't very much hotter than standard pressure stuff. Shoot away. The ammunition you should avoid is Plus-P-Plus stuff (+P+). It is loaded to low end .357 Mag pressures and while it won't likely blow up your gun, it will accelerate wear. +P+ isn't generally available in mass quantities, as it was usually loaded by contract for large law enforcement agencies, to their specifications rather than for commercial sales, but you do see it for sale a box here and a box there at gun shows and such.

Welcome to the site.

Martinfender- At least you didn't ask if +P 38 Special ammo was too hot for your N frame 357 Magnum. Seen that question a couple of times.

PS: You ask a question on an open forum and you are inviting all responses. You can't be so thin skinned that you get your nose out of joint over attempts at humor or self-righteousness (which IMO is far worse than condescension, mikeruns).

Mr. Martin, Welcome to the forum. You will find that most of the members are
most willing to answer any question one might have. There is a few grouchy
people that complain about everything.

I have a model 67 of the same year as yours. I have fired thousands of today's weak
+p with no problem.

This is true, most modern +P is loaded to about 18000 psi.

The K-frame Smiths were designed from the beginning (circa 1900, 60 years before "+P") around .38 Special ammunition with a standard pressure of around 20000 cup, which is about 21500 psi.

This older ammo is what earned the .38 Special it's reputation as a good round, not the far weaker modern ammunition we have today.

Martin, check out the link above if you have not already found it. Discussion about heat treatment of models 66 vs. 67. While speculative, it is educational and may give you some insight into your original question.

I've been shooting S&W's for over 35 years. But, my knowledge base has more than doubled since joining this forum nearly 4 years ago. Please, ask questions. You will get expert answers - and then some! There are some colorful characters here, no doubt.

viceunit- You do understand that I was mocking those who unjustly criticize me, right? Right?

All I do is be direct and speak the truth. Some people can't handle the truth (shrug inserted)... or directness.

Please note that I have never... not even once... made personal insults. I may comment on the wisdom of an action, or disagree, but I never call anyone names. I leave that for others and there seems to be no shortage of them. Note all the things I have been called. (Happy faces abound!)
