Looking at my first 4 inch 28. S262XXX . Have few questions.

What kind of grips are on the gun?

How much are mid 1960's S series 4" shooter grade 28-2 are selling for these days? (They are asking 600.00 OTD for this one)

As far as durability with magnum ammo , how would this gun compare to a modern (or recent ) 686?

Thank You .

That's probably not a bad price if it functions like it's supposed to. I'm going to say it's stronger than the 686 ,but I may be wrong. And I can't help with the stocks other than they are not original, but you probably knew that.

Saw one locally Wednesday with ratty Pachs in about same condition otherwise for $475. First one I'd seen under $500 in over a year. Grips look like the Bear Hug Skeeter Skelton grip. If so, that's a plus. Not sure it's a $100 plus, but any quality wood grip is a plus.

The grips are not original to the gun, it would have had magnas, or S&W targets......the grips on the gun look like smooth presentation grips, from an after market maker.....nice grips, but they are not originals......, it is an "S" series gun.......made before 1968.....if it is tight, and right, it will handle any ammo that you can put in it.......and in my opinion, a better made gun than any of the new ones.......I think $600.00 is a bargain.......BUY IT!!!

Semper Fi!

Not a Bad Looking Gun ... Looks like it has been shot some, looking at The Cylinder As Long As It Locks Up Good & Nothing is Too Loose ... Should Not
Be a Problem ... Slightly Older Guns In My Opinion (NOT ANTIQUES) Have
NO PROBLEMS Handling Modern Loads .. (Some Things Were Built a Little Better Back Then)
Nice Looking Wood .. I Like It .. other than not having S&W Medallions ..
Which You might find someone that could insert those If You so Desired..
If I didn't have so many 28's I might buy it ... But I always make A Counter Offer of a Little Less ..
Sometimes They Say Yes ... COWBOYUP57 ...

Nice looking 28 and grips. It will hold up to heavy magnum loads better than any other S&W gun chambered for the round. It is the same gun as the famous model 27 except the fancy got left off. Same frame size as the 41 mag, 44 mag, and 45 caliber guns. It isn't called the "work horse" gun for nothing.

28-2

4 inch N frame will handle any ammo you can stuff in it. Nice looking grips, non- relieved smooth targets not S&W but well made. Well worth the asking price if lock up is ok.

$600 if it is as nice as the photo indicates is okay. Not a steal and you would not be getting robbed.

IMHO

The gun looks pretty good to me. And the non-stock grips look great on it too. Can't guess as to manufacturer, but I like them.
I think $600 is in line with current values.

If it's mechanically sound, I wouldn't think twice at $600 for an S Prefix N frame. Grips don't look original to me.

I'll take all of them that look like that at 600 OTD
S series N frame
Heck yeah..... Bargain for around here.

Aftermarket smooth Targets look good but i would put on some service stocks.

And that gun will handle everything you feed it from mild .38's up to the hottest .357's
all day long.

I love my 28's, both 4". One a 5 screw and the other a 28-2. Now those grip have me baffled... Why the round washers when there's no medallion on the other side, or are there two sets of grips and we just don't have all the photos?

Same set of grips . Front and back. Never seen grips like that. Wondering who made them .

Lots of makers made grips of that general configuration, with only subtle diffeences. Lacking markings on the inside, probably no way to know.
