Can anyone tell me if this was factory done.

Serial number dates this to 1980.

Also would like to know current value if possible.

S&W did not port their revolvers (at least in 1980). The ports look like they were done by Mag-na-Port Arms.

Bill

OK, Bill, thanks for the info.. It looks to be little fired at all. No bluing wear.

Any idea what it would bring in today's market?

I am not really current on prices of 29-2s made around 1980, but I am sure someone will come along with a decent estimate.

The value is going to depend on your location. If you're in one of the handgun law strangled states like California, prices are inherently higher than the "free" states.

Value will also be highly dependant on whether or not the person that buys it values the porting... that's going to be the biggest factor.

There seems to be consensus/controversy out there that many hold... that Mag-na-porting decreases the value because it renders the gun non factory in appearance, and many also feel that any perceived reduction in recoil/muzzle flip is offset by the increase in noise.

I tend to disagree, my experience with a Mag-na-ported long barrelled revolver (and it happens to be a M29-2) is a positive add-on... but you'll probably have 10 people saying it ruins the gun for every person like me that thinks it's a plus.

The other pluses is that being a -2, it is a "pinned & recessed" gun, the 29-3 eliminated the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, which many people disliked happening.

So... ballpark value given the variables, I'll guess $600-700.

Assuming there is no presentation case, docs or tools, it would normally be worth around $800.00.

The magnaport job reduces the value by about 25%.

I had the opportunity to shoot two identical 29s-- 8 3/8'' one with and one without Magnaport and to me the recoil was much easier to handle in the ported one with full house loads. Same deal with 2 4'' 29s but you do get more (pardon the pun bang for the buck) with a longer barrel. Yes the noise factor goes up.

If I was looking to get a big kicker and it had porting I would get it with no regrets. I do not buy investment quality guns as I enjoy shooting.

I general, ANYTHING that was NOT Factory installed will decrease value. After market Magna-porting is no different. I do not own any guns that are ported and don't care much for them due mostly to the increased noise! They are also a pain to keep clean and IMHO detract from the original "beauty" of the gun. This is just my personal opinion and many people DO like porting. It WILL cut down on muzzle flip however you will pay the price in other areas. I would also think (although I've never actually Chronographed two exact models one with and one without porting) muzzle velocity might decrease slightly in the ported guns. Again, a very personal thing and many do love their ported guns!
