I took a 66-1 4" to a gun show Saturday to sell. A friend said that the 66 never came from the factory with target grips. He said the first target grips came out in 1986. I believe I have owned early 66's and 19's with target grips from factory. Who is right?

Then again, target grips for what?!!

Target grips, per se arrived on the scene in 1893---see the 1st Model Single Shot---followed by the 2nd---and the 3rd, all of which I dare say are a whole bunch more interesting any way you look at it than pretty much anything that came down the pike afterwards---except for maybe the 4th Model---which on the one hand was a total rolling disaster from the commercial point of view; but nobody can say it wasn't interesting---not even me!!

Of course, all that comes under the heading of "Different strokes for different folks"!

In the post WWII period, K and N frame target grips were introduced in the early 1950s, I believe K target grips were 1st. The first N target grips were the original “Coke (bottle)” grips with no checkering or relief cuts (for ease of ejecting cases).

I agree Model 66 4” & 6” barrel lengths could be had with target grips.

This and much more information is all in the SCSW books in the grip section.

The Model 66 (regular production began to ship in 1971) was standard with target stocks made of Goncalo alves (like the Model 19). The first documented target stocks for an N-frame revolver date to November 1951. I think K-frame targets were introduced in late 1949 or very early in 1950.
