Bought this in a small batch of guns traded in by an NYPD officer. 10-6 and a 36. I also kept a 4" blue Ruger Service Six NYPD gun.

10-6 4” was shipped September 24, 1968 to NYPD Equipment Bureau.
The 36 was shipped April 20, 1966 to Harvan Sporting Goods, NYC

These 2 predate the NY-1 series. Neither will win a beauty contest but glad to have them in my collection.

My collection can be viewed here if interested.
Private stock (NFS) – R and G Firearms

I have 2 NY1s and 3 model 10s that shipped to NYPD.

That Model 10's bluing is in surprisingly intact condition for being a duty gun that old. The stocks tell the story though - if those guns could talk!

Great photos, thanks for sharing! It's a shame the NYC Service Sixes generally can't be traced back AFAIK due to Ruger's lack of records from the time.

This 10 has more wear than the last NYPD 10-6 I bought. But not bad. The NYPD 10-8 I picked up earlier looks like it was drug behind a truck.

The Ruger letters to NYPD.

Ah, that's awesome! I tried lettering my Service Six, but it's from 1976 and Ruger no longer has records from that era that show where it went. Glad to see the eighties models are still traceable. Wish I would've bought a later stainless Service Six, with a factory bobbed hammer and chambered in 38 Special, that I came across last year in a shop on Long Island. Probably would've come from the city.

They sure look like duty revolvers, well worn on the outside, but not shot to death.

There was a gun shop right near 1 Police Plaza that retiring guys would go and sell their revolvers as they walked off the job. I recall milk crates full of guns that you could pick from. I seem to recall $100 for a 4” revolver, usually Model 10’s but occasional Service Six in blue, and $150 for a Model 36. Stainless DAO guns went for less.

I should have bought them all at those prices.

Yep. Woulda, shoulda, coulda, and hindsight is 20/20. Decades ago I passed on a lot of things that I would like to have now, but at the time I did not have surplus money. Today, given inflation, I still don't have surplus money, so I guess that is one of the constants of life.

What do you mean, they wouldn't win a beauty contest?
You need to get your eyes checked.;)

I guess. But $100 for a S&W revolver wasn’t that much money even back in 1993. They surely were never gonna get cheaper. A new NY-1 Model 64 was like $190 from the equipment section. While it might have been a bit of a stretch to buy them all as a rookie cop taking home about $900 a month after taxes, Union dues, and deferred comp payments, I could have grabbed a couple.

I have some Ruger records; if you think its a Job Gun, send me the s/n and I'll see if it comes up.

Best,
RM Vivas

I'll keep that in mind for the future - thanks! The one I presently have is a near-new condition model purchased online from an out-of-state collector. But I did come across one recently in a gun shop up in Orange County that might have some NYC lineage. May have to go back and give it a look this week.

That explains the AJC stamp on the belt holster.

Thanks!

Nice additions!
Unfortunately I won’t make revolver roundup this year, but loved seeing so many old classics in one place. In this day and age old classic wheel guns are an under appreciated art form, both the guns themselves and skilled use of them

What shop in Orange County? I never see NYPD revolvers anymore. Not trying to snag it from you. I have enough. I just pass through those shops all the time and never see them. Not like I used to.

There was one in Goshen about 15 years ago that had a 3” NY-1. I passed in it. Very stupidly I might add. But I was t in the collector mode back then.

It is 162-18830. It certainly looks like a gun that has seen some job work.

My NYPD Service Six has serial number 162-18818 and it shipped to the NYPD in January 1987. Yours was likely the same shipment. Last class with the blued guns before the July 1987 class.
