So I have a S&W 317 2" and love it. Now I am wanting to upgrade and get a 342PD, 442, or 642. I have been looking for good deals on one and the other day I got out the 317 and was thinking how great this little gun was. So we all know the 342,442,and 642s are great guns for CCW but does anyone use the 317 for CCW?

Thanks

While CCW/self defense was the intended market for the 2" M-317, and it IS better than a bar of soap in a tube sock, I can't think I would be well-served depending on a .22 fired from a 2" barrel to stop the action if needed.

For very little extra weight, one of the lightweight J frame .38's is a far better choice.

With ammunition prices what they are now, that same M-317 would be a great practice gun to back up something like a M-642 though.

Depends on the environment. Yes I do carry my 317 but it is usually when I go hiking in the river bottoms. First 2 are birdshot, the balance are CCI mini mags. It fits nicely in a back jean pocket and the shotshells will neatly end the existance of any Copperhead within about 15ft. The only other potential threats are packs of wild dogs and Methheads. The Minimags are quite effective on K9s. And the Meth cookers are not the brightest bunch. They tend to be noisy and not really aware of their surroundings so it is pretty easy to slip away and report them to LE . In other settings, I carry a Airweight Bodyguard in 38 spl or a KelTech P32 depending on dress.

I've carried mine daily for about five years, particularly when walking the dogs. The clear finish is starting to wear. It's my favorite handgun... 'though I am considering a 351PD next!
