.500 S&W or .460XVR
Which would you buy? I'm think the .460xvr may be the way to go considering the ability to shoot .454 casual and .45 colt. I won't be buying one anytime soon since I just bought another handgun, XDM 3.8" 45.

Common question. If you rely on factory ammo, the .460 is clearly the better choice, a much wider range of options.
If you reload, the .500 has equal versatility and the a growing edge in power. You can load whatever you want. For both, factory ammo in .460 Mag and .500 Mag is very expensive, so for most, reloading is a must and absolutely a must if you don't like to waste money. Don

460 will let you load down much further. I hunted with a 454Casull for years. It was over kill for deer and bear and was too heavy and cumbersome. It also weighed as much as my rifle. I went back to a 6" 629 44mag and have never been more mobile and happier. I can hunt all day and never notice the gun in my bandolier holster. Knock down power is just as good on deer, drops them in their tracks. Other than large brown bear defense, I see no practical reason for the additional, power, weight, and recoil for anything I hunt. They are fun range guns.
Think about what you want your handgun to do.

I did a search on the 460xvr and saw one member was using some kind of sleeve insert that holds a 22lr in the chamber. That's pretty cool considering I have over 10k rds of 22lr. But what other rounds will it shoot?

Simple decision, really. Do you want the versatility of the 460 or the ultimate power of the 500. I opted for the 500. It fits my needs.

Aw come on, what .454 weighs as much as a rifle? My 8 3/8th" .500 Mag is 5# loaded and that's about as heavy as they get. 5# scoped rifles? Not much of a market for them if they even exist. Don

A 460 with Burris scope weighs about 6.5lbs. That carries heavier than a Sako light weight rifle because of how it is distributed.. Even a 5lbs pistol is just awkward to carry all day. Its weight is not distributed like a rifle with a forearm. The leverage isn't there with a pistol. I even tried it with a big Thompson for a year, it was like carrying a 4lbs pocket knife. I found once you get past the 3lbs mark, you can't carry a pistol on the hip all day.

Do you want the biggest and the baddest or the almost biggest and baddest?
Do you want to win the race or come in second?
Do you want to be the lead dog or look at the rear of another dog?

I have an inexpensive Uncle Mike's shoulder holster that makes a .500 Mag hardly noticeable. Each to his own, good shot on that deer. Don

I guess if this is a rationale for dropping a huge amount of coin, then go for it.
Me, I always ask "What will it be used for?" Then I purchase the appropriate firearm. If I was on a brown bear hunt or a safari for African lion, this would seem an appropriate choice. For punching holes in paper, or elk or smaller critters, it is not worth the investiture of time, money, and noise that accompany such a specialized, small niche, firearm.
For me a good .44 magnum or stout .45 Colt does 99% of what I need a revolver for. YMMV
However, there is always the Bigger is Better appeal...no denying that! Maybe that is an XY chromosome thing. Buy what makes you happy.

I have the 460XVR. With factory ammo, the energy for both tops out nearly equal. I have found 460 ammo to be about half the cost of the 500 ammo where I live. The option for shooting .454 Casull and .45 Colt swayed my decision.

Mostly true, the .460 uses the entire cylinder length. If you want even more power out of the .500, seat the slugs to use the entire cylinder and up the velocity goes. I don't do that, John Ross does and gets well over 3000 ft lbs out of his loads. Don

Agreed on the handloading potential. The hottest commercial round I have found for the 460 is a Buffalo Bore that is rated at 2864 ft. lbs. The hottest commercial round I have found for the 500 is a Double Tap rated just over 3000 ft. lbs. The ability to shoot the other rounds outweighed the slight difference in energy potential.

I had a 5" 460 last year and took 2 whitetail bucks with it. It's a great gun but was a lot more than I needed. The44 mag or 45 lc does everything I need.

I own 10 xframes, in both 460 and 500.
My personal favorites in the 460 is the 12" 460 and in the 500 the 5" John Ross PC.
Both are good guns and have the ability to shoot a variety of load if you are a reloader. There are more factory ammo choices for the 460, in addition to the 45 Colt and 454 Casull you can shot the 45 AR and 45 Schofield cartridges also, though none will shoot as accurate as the 460.
My preference is the 460, factory ammo cost are a little lower as well as reloading cost. I do not shoot anything but 460 in mine which can be loaded to the same functional levels as the above mentioned cartridges with better accuracy for the same cost.
The 500 can be more than a hand full for most shooters; most that shoot it elect only to pull the trigger 1 time.
I would shoot both guns before buying one to make sure you are going to enjoy the big bore handgun experience.
For me there is nothing better.

Typically I have a scope on the gun but it was removed for the annual cleaning and inspection.
Since the gun was all cleaned I did the photo.
The gun comes with a removable front site which clamps to the barrel.
Another picture for your viewing pleasure

I eventually ended up with both, but before I knew that would happen I bought the 8-3/8" 460. That was my first choice on the grounds often mentioned above: availability of a wide variety of commercial ammo.
A year or so later I found an almost new 4" 500 with its case on the consignment shelf in a San Diego gun store. I bought it on the spot.
I like them both, but the preference shifts from gun to gun over time. Funny thing, it's not the caliber that determines which I like more on a given day, but the barrel length.

I opted for the 460
The Ammo choices made sense and the 460 is no weak dog
Maybe its a coincidence but there is quite a few less used 460s
500s are maybe 4 to 1 460
Maybe they just made a lot more 500s not sure
