I'm shopping grips for my new round butt N-frame Model 627 and I have noticed some sellers market their grips as fitting both a round or square butt frame. The ones I've seen are cut for a square butt but they say they fit round butt, too. Is this true? Will square butt grips work on a round butt gun?

Thanks!

I think the term is round to square butt conversion. Take a look at N frame retro target grips at Ahrends grips and you'll see examples. It is not a true square butt grip but has the look of a square butt.

Can you link a example?
As far as I am aware a good fitting grip will only fit one or the other.
There are conversion grips for round to square but I dont think those will fit on a square butt frame.

I should have clarified, but I'm not referring to the conversion grips. The conversions I've seen are clearly cut inside for a round butt then shaped on the outside for a square butt. I'm talking about grips cut on the inside for a square butt. Here's a link to an ebay ad illustrating what I'm referring to:

Scroll down and look at the pictures.

And here's a link to a set in our own classifieds:

I belive those are made to order.
English may not be their primary language and they mean you can have them made to fit round or square is my guess.

Breechloader,

What about the Ahrends in the other link? (I edited the above post to add the link)

Yeah, I've checked out Ahrends web page also and didn't see any listed for both either which is what's confusing me. :D

I think I'll just assume they won't fit and look for a set made specifically for a round butt frame.

Thank you for your help!

I have a set of S&W square-butt targets that someone converted to fit my round-butt 586. Doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to do the same to any set. They work perfectly.

I regularly mount SB rubber grips on RB revolvers if both frame sizes are the same. The grip pin at the base of the frame is usually in the same location and will secure the grip in place after both halves are screwed together. K and L frame grips fit both frames as the grips are the same dimensions. I HAVE had difficulties in mounting, say, a RB K/L grip on a RB N-frame. Close, but no cigar.

Some of Pachmayr's grips for J-frames are molded for the SB only, but as above, the RB fits neatly inside. Hope this helps.

Any of the Pachmayr K/L SB grips will screw right on to the RB, just will leave a little gap at the bottom below where my hand sits. Aside from one "grip police" S&W "expert" who saw my SB Pro Gripper on my K RB frame and threw a small fit saying it could not be done, no one else has ever noticed.

I think if you have a set of closed-backstrap stocks (like alot of the rubber ones) for a square butt they will fit & look pretty nice, but am not sure they would have enough contact with the frame for a heavy recoiler. That would be an engineering question and I barely escaped with a history degree!:) The open backstrap versions leave an unsightly gap.

You should also try the Altamont Gun Grip website they make a true round to square conversion grip. Also buying direct will save you about 20 bucks.

I have looked at Altamont and do like their grips, but prefer the classic panel over the conversion. I think I'm going to give the Ahrends Retro Targets a shot.

I USE AHRENDS CONVERSION GRIPS ON ALL OF MY ROUND FRAME K/L AND N FRAME REVOLVERS. THEY ALLOW SQUARE FRAME GRIPS TO FIT ON ROUND BUTT FRAMES.......
