Recently bought a used a 317 3" that was supposed to have been a S&W demo gun. Thinking of replacing the main spring, and perhaps rebound spring with a set of Wolff springs. Anyone see any issues with this? Gun is going to be a fun shooter and maybe a walk in the woods piece.

I replaced the mainspring in my 617 with a Wolff and like it a lot.

Have the same gun. I would hesitate before changing springs as this is a VERY lightweight gun and the hammer can use the extra oomph of the factory mainspring to ignite .22RF primers which can be tough.

I understand that could be an issue, but I'm hoping folks who've made the change will say it's not been an issue. :)

I have a Mod 43 that I bought new in 1968 and it's got a significantly better DA pull. I wish I had a trigger pull scale to measure them.

I have a 317 2".

The trigger was AWFUL. Double action must have been 15 pounds+. I replaced the mainspring with a Wolff.

The new spring gave much needed improvement, the only problem being, it wouldn't reliably pop of a round in double action.

Single action firing was fine.

As it is a field gun, used for snakes, etc., I left it like that, as single action was fine for that purpose.

My lady, had developed an interest in the gun, for light concealed carry, so will probably switch back to the factory spring.

I also have a 9 shot 2" Taurus (gasp), that has the same problem, after cutting the spring a bit. I know, I know, but I bought the Taurus, cause it holds 9, instead of 6, or 8. Fit, and finish is fine.I like the gun.

I've found, as most probably have, that even with factory springs an occasional 22 round doesn't fire. So perhaps lighter springs aren't always the issue.

I don't know about the rimfire models, but the standard mainspring for a j-frame 38 is supposedly 8.5# The usual Wolff or Wilson replacement spring is 8#. I don't see much improvement there so I leave the stock mainspring alone. The stock rebound (trigger return) spring is sopposedly 18#, I've installed 13# springs in all of my j-frames. They work great and it really lightens up the DA pull. I believe Wolff Wilson and Apex all sell spring kits with a new main spring and a selection of rebound springs.

That's what I was planning to buy, with the selection of rebound springs. I have those for my 617 but haven't installed the rebound springs. I'm waiting for my S&W shop manual to come first.
