Hi,
I'm looking to buy my first Smith and Wesson. Unfortunately I live in California and have to go by the Department of Justice approved handgun list. There are a lot of S&W models that look the same (at least to me, or based on the sellers descriptions)on the list so they use SKU numbers. Here is what the list looks like;
27-9 (75th Anniversary) SKU 150974 / Steel Revolver 6.5" .357 Magnum 10/12/2014
27-9 (Blue) SKU 150339 / Steel Revolver 4" .357 Magnum 9/3/2014
27-9 (Blue) SKU 150341 / Steel Revolver 6.5" .357 Magnum 9/3/2014
27-9 (Nickel) SKU 150340 / Steel Revolver 4" .357 Magnum 10/28/2014
27-9 (Nickel) SKU 150342 / Steel Revolver 6.5" .357 Magnum 10/28/2014
29-10 (Blue) SKU 150145A / Steel Revolver 6.5" .44 Magnum 6/12/2015
29-10 (Blue) SKU 150254 / Steel Revolver 4" .44 Magnum 9/23/2014
29-10 (Nickel) SKU 150255 / Steel Revolver 4" .44 Magnum 9/23/2014
29-10 Classic (Blue, Engraved) SKU 150201 / Steel Revolver 6.5" .44 Mag 8/29/2014
29-10 Classic (Nickel, Engraved) SKU 150202 / Steel Revolver 6.5" .44 Mag 8/29/2014

Some ad's I see list the SKU some don't. Where would I find the SKU number on the pistol itself?

You won't find it on the gun. The SKU is a S&W #. Some vendors will use a version of the S&W SKU and add their own few digits, some leave it the same. It is always a 6 digit # From S&W.

I would go to S&W sight, pick the compliant gun you want, write down the SKU and do a search with that #. Usually the S&W sight will list the gun as CA. compliant to help narrow your search.

I threw a couple of those SKU's at S&W site. It looks, how can I word this?

It looks like brand new guns, (updated internals and such, today's technology) that are reproductions of older popular revolvers.

I don't think it has anything to do with CA. compliant. I'm not sure revolvers have an issue compliance wise in CA. only auto's.

My best guess is that 15xxxx is the SKU for these "new reproductions".

Check this link:Product: ARCHIVE: Model 29 - S&W Classics - 4" - Nickel
Read the overview.

Any takers?

So is S&W now using the 15xxxx product code prefix to designate California approved guns?

A code

I found something on Calguns forums. It looks like the A is a designation for California approved and they stamp the firearm as well. The approved list requires some drop testing of guns to make sure they wont fire, a chamber loaded indicator and a empty magazine safety the prevents semi autos from firing when there isn't a magazine inserted. Oh yeah and what must be a large payment to California to be on the list another year.

I use google and enter the sku number and "S&W", it will generate the s&w page for that product, even if it is discontinued. Then you will have all the specs available for that gun. Ed
